Personable catfish for a planted 90g?

Post by Bixby Habitats »

Morning again fellow keepers, so to approach my earlier post from a different perspective, about stocking advice. I am relatively new to fishkeeping, especially catfish. I've had bad luck with bristlenose plecos. The corys do fine, but I think would do better in a species tank. So simply put...

You have a 90g heavily planted tank with 2 sponge filters and 2 of the big Marineland Hob filters loaded to the gills with filter floss and biorings. You do a 40% wc weekly. There are no fish in the tank. You want a personable, active largish catfish or group of smaller cats that will be comfortable in that tank with said wc schedule full time for their whole lifespan. What do you pick?

P.S. I know an earlier post said pictus as an option but looking out for more possibilities before I make a decision.

I have 3 species of hoplo in my planted 75. Very pleasant, no aggression whatsoever. They need sand though, they like to dig pretty deep.

Large hoplo is in a buddy's tank and it is always out swimming.

The smaller ones are part of a trio in my 60g and they are always out too. They are housed with Herotilapia Multispinosa grow outs.

How big of a group would you do in a 90? Max out about 4"? I was thinking of something a bit bigger but that albino does look pretty neat.

Flagtail hoplos would be nice indeed.

6-8 would work. The Flagtail portholes @bekateen mentioned would be a great choice too.

Really depends what kind of cats you like. A group of mystus bimaculatus is an option.

Update. After looking over my local fish stores I have found only portholes, no hoblos sadly. 36 each seems steep as well. But there were only 2 and they are cute little buggers so into qt they journey.
