Zebra pleco spawning caves - question

Post by Dale90g »

Have looked, but would like to hear more on the what people have used for caves for breeding the zebras. I am building slate caves, but would like to give them choices. Look to the group for ideas and experience. Hope, you don't mind another zebra topic/post. Thanks.

Dale,
I cover this in my talk at Erie County AS meeting next week.

Basically, the fish will prefer a cave that it can just fit in that it can block the entire cave opening with it's body. Also, allot of Ancistrines prefer caves that are either uniform in size or taper down smaller as you go back.

We'll talk alot more about it Wednesday. BTW: Barring weather conditions, Ken Walker and I are making a trip to NY that day. Wanna tag along?
Sincerely,

I know about the cave and size, was just interested in what other materials, or how others made them. Like I said, I'm making slate caves, but will probably add others types with info given. Better chance of success, I think. A couple of speakers at the club (Sally B) would offer many types to get fish to breed. Let the fish pick what they want. Just looking for more input.

You going to the OCA auction this weekend in OH? I'll email offline to discuss NY.

I've seen 1" or 1 1/2" PVC pipes used. They would use silicone glue for sealing tanks on the outside to glue the same type of rocks they have as substrate so that it blends in.
