Tatia Galaxias

Post by fishguy1978 »

I have seen Tatia Galaxias available from an online retailer. I'm not worried about them being misidentified T. intermedia as either would be an interesting addition to my fish room. My question is, would it be possible to put one or 3 into my micro cats tank? I have 4 microglanis iheringi, 2 glass cats, 2 banjo cats, and 2 parrot doradids housed together. Would I be better off housing them with my hoplo cats in a cooler Central American tank with a pair of Herotilapia Multispinosa (Rainbow Cichlid)?

Good luck with the fish. I'm intrigued that your Central American tank is your "cooler" tank. I read that is a hot temp fish over much of its distribution. I've been breeding them at 86F!

Cheers, Eric

I did find a source that stated in the wild they can be found in 91F/33c temp water. They have spawned multiple times but have only produced fry twice. This last time two pairs formed and both produced broods :-O. The fry become one big swarm with one pair guarding them so I had to remove the other pair and a solo adult.

I started with mine at 90F, but found out they did just fine in the low to mid 80s, so I keep them in mid 80s. They breed like guppies, and the parents are't very big, maybe 3". I have a breeding report on https://www.aquaticrepublic.com/, and my breeding male is in one of the CLOG page photos.

I hope you have better luck with the fry in the future.

Cheers, Eric

I've often seen advertised, and has always been , which yours look like, though intermedia is a complex of species, so not sure which one!
Still a great fish, they take a variety of foods and can be quite active at feeding time.
Enjoy!

Thanks, I looked the different Tatia sp. profiles to see if I could determine which cats I received but I'm still not sure. I knew the chances of actually receiving Galaxy was pretty slim.

They are coloring up nicely. Very dark with a off white belly. Hard to photograph though as they don't sit still and only venture out for food when the lights are on.

Beautiful fish! I would agree with Martin S, these do look like young intermedia. These are some of the most interesting fish you can get, Auchenipteride is an interesting family.

Definitely not Galaxy. They have colored up nicely though and come out to feed whenever I drop food in.

Yup. Really do look like . Beautiful. I brought some back from Peru. Didn't catch them myself, but I bought them from a local exporter before I left. They sell them as Novia sp. Nanay: https://linksharing.samsungcloud.com/lOim5KXcD0tI

Did they survive? I saw your post about losing some fish because they were bagged with Cory cats.

Watched these guys feed and they know no personal space. Push in on any other fish or through what ever is in front of them. They were even swimming up off the bottom to feed on pellets floating around.
