Liosomadorus oncinus, Jaguar Cats spawned again!

Post by jeremybasch »

So happy to have jaguar catfish babies again. This batch did much better than my first attempt. Here is a photo of one of the babies.

Is this the first reported success in natural spawning in captivity? If so, this is a major achievement. I don't recall ever encountering this...

If I recall correctly, Jeremy has spawned them before, but I don't think he got this far with them last time.

Agreed, great accomplishment.

Yes, this is the second successful spawning. I've had previous spawns and sometimes the eggs are infertile. Prior to this, a female laid 1,000 infertile eggs. Unfortunately the recent deposit of eggs was 2 days before my appendix ruptured. I'm lucky to have any that survived especially now knowing that the fry can be aggressive with each other.

We're all glad you survived that, let alone your jaguar fry.

I think my fry make quick meals of their smaller siblings.

Thanks Eric, I'm lucky as I was in Tennessee trying to fish. Didn't even get to get wet.

I guess it is all about opportunity. If it fits in your mouth, a fish is going to try to get it. I've since been able to increase the number of water changes. Hope they spawn again, I'm still learning about this neat species. That said, I have a special fish arriving this week. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations Jeremy, good luck raising the fry. I kept two pairs of this species for a while, a fun fish to keep, but unfortunately lost them due to, I think, velvet. Certainly a species I'd like to keep again.
