Nannoptopoma sp. PERU(1) spawning

Post by eric3333 »

I was able to see two of my Hypotopoma sp. PERU(1)
IMG_7229 Hypoptopoma fry.JPG
spawning on the back wall of the aquarium. The young parents laid three rather large eggs about one quarter inch apart on the aquarium wall. The eggs hatched in four to five days and the larva moved from the egg site but stayed on the back wall. The larva did not move much till they went free-swimming after five more days. The attached picture is of a free-swimming fry. Has anyone had success with this Hypoptopoma sp.? Thanks for the info.

Thanks Eric, this one kind of surprised me since it happened so soon after setting the group up in their own tank.

That is really cool, we would certainly use the fry pic for the species profile if you were minded. Do you have a picture of the adults too? That'd be great,

Not great ones right now but I will work on getting some good pictures of the adults to post and for your use. You are most welcome to use the fry picture too.

This one is 14 days old and still in the main tank. I had tried to feed about six of them artificially in a separate container but they would not eat my offerings which surprised me as I was offering rotifers and algae covered leaves. Still might not be the right size and I will have to adjust next time.

Thanks guys. I am feeding many foods but the fry are not eating my offerings for any length of time. They have not lived past a couple of weeks so far. Every spawn is split into small groups of a few individuals each for food testing. Some groups are setup in feeding rings with the fine mesh bottom to test specific foods and some are tried in 15 gallon tanks with different type long established (6 month) fishless biotopes for more natural offerings. I had great hopes for the tanks. But even with all that volume for three tiny fry, no improvement so far. The fry are robust enough and do move around a fair amount so my offerings are just not acceptable yet. I still have some food ideas for the next batch and will also try three more biotopes that are different.

I appreciate this is an old thread.

Did you manage raise the fry successfully and if so what was the breeding setup and fry care that worked?

Thank you for your time

No, I never did get the fry to live for very long even with all the different offerings of food. Sadly, my group of adults is not around anymore. Hans Evers gave me some advice as to raising the fry, "These Nannoptopoma are not the easiest ones, indeed! I would try with stones and sticks from a clean pond or creek, covered with detritus and biofilm. This is what I suppose to be their food in nature, adults and offspring. It worked well with Hypoptopoma years ago." I will try this method next plus a cultured algae tank as well. They are a great species to work with and I look forward to getting another group. Good luck to you if you have or are getting this fish.
