Monster Catfish Book?

Post by Acro »

Are there any good books on the care of Monster Catfish?

I'll have some indoor pond space soon and I'm looking to learn! At work, I'm allowed to read books, but no phones or other devices can be used. It would be nice to have a Monster Catfish book to read while I'm sitting there bored.

Please reply if you know of any good books. smile1

I wonder wheter there are any books, after all, a book needs to be sold, and there are not thwat many people wanting a big - 30 cm, 1 foot, fish or larger.

Now, what will a fish need to thrive? Room, food an perfect water. The latter will be the same whether the fis is 1 cm or 30, and therefore I would suggest starting with regular books about fish keeping.

in this site, you can find out details about the fishes themselves, in your free time.

I have 10+ years keeping goldfish and tropical fish. I already have plenty regular fish keeping books, so I'm looking for something beyond that. smile1

Looks like some great links there, but I can't use them at work.

Any more book suggestions? :)

Yes, I would recommend "Monster Catfish: Fishing for Whales" by Paul Andrulis.

I do not have many fish books. I do have a few on plecos. One is Ingo Seidel's Back to Nature Guide to L-Catfishes.

It covers a lot of plecos not just the big ones. it has general things like dietary considerations, breeding, habitats etc. Then it goes into details of the specific fish by Genus. It also contains lots of pictures.

Some of the books I have on big catfish are:

EMPEROR OF THE AMAZON THE HANDBOOK OF THE RED TAILED CATFISH by David Sands

The Catfish Connection: Ecology, Migration, and Conservation of Amazon Giants

Baensch Catfish Atlas, Volume 1

Atlas of Freshwater and Marine Catfishes : A Preliminary Survey of the Siluriformes

Pims Pimelodidae, Heptapteridae and Pseudopimelodidae Catfishes

Field Guide to the Fishes of the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guianas

The Complete Book of the Giant Catfish: The History of the Wels Catfish and How to Catch Them

Jurassic Fishes: Selection - Care - Behavior

Those are from memory, I'd have to go through my book collection (in boxes) for other titles. Also numerous Japanese book titles, Aquarium Magazine subscriptions, articles and species specific scientific journals. Large asian catfish information can be hard to find unless a food species.

Most of these are on fish species (still important) but not the maintenance and care of large tanks. There seems to be an information gap for very large fish tank keepers. Some fanatical koi pond forums, reef2reef (marine), old posts on monster fish keeper forum, you tube in recent times discuss large water volume fish keeping.

Many of these books are out of print, not all are worth the pricetag unless your an aquarium book collector (like me).

Only a handful of members keep big tanks. I'll let them pipe up if they want to. I've got several good sized tanks (10 tonne to 100 tonne) and a few normal sized tanks. Feel free to message me privately if you want to chat about designing, building, filtering, maintaining, breeding etc relevant to large water volumes. Fish disease, transport and quarantine should be considered as well.

Also, and I may suffer some disbelief from others; Most of the large fish i have become pets which can sense my "energy" level so it's easy to excite or calm them on a higher level as needed. Probably a mix of fish behaviour, body language and aura.
