Phylogenetic analysis of Corydoras arcuatus mitochondrial genome

Post by bekateen »

Liu, Y., Xu, B., Xiao, T., & Liu, Q. (2019). Characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Corydoras arcuatus mitochondrial genome. Mitochondrial DNA Part B, 4(2), 2876-2877.

Abstract
Corydoras arcuatus is a kind of famous and precious ornamental fish. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome yielded by next-generation sequencing of Corydoras arcuatus was assembled and analyzed. The total length of the mitochondrial genome is 16,822 bp, with the base composition of 32.40% A, 26.10% T, 26.30% C, and 15.20% G. It contains two ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a major non-coding control region (D-loop region). The arrangement of these genes is the same as that found in the Siluriformes. All the protein initiation codons are ATG, except for cox1 that begins with GTG. The complete mitogenomes of C. arcuatus and other 17 species from nine genera were used for phylogenetic analysis by Neighbour-Joining method. The topology demonstrated that all species are divided into three groups (Siluridae, Loricariidae, and Callichthyidae), and the C. arcuatus was clustered with C. rabauti and C. nattereri.

Well, I learned the Chinese common name for Corydoras is mouse catfish.

Indeed quite possible. That said, their analysis figure is correct if it's arcuatus or granti. No real discovery there.

Cheers, Eric

Hi all,

Following the other similar thread "Complete mitochondrial genome of Corydoras sterbai"(viewtopic.php?f=14&t=48285). I had a look at their papers, partially because I was interested in how they knew their fish was really .

in Liu et al (2019) "Characterization and phylogenetic analysis of Corydoras arcuatus mitochondrial genome" (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10 ... 19.1660251)

The collection locality was given as
........ The living body of C. arcuatus were collected from the Red Star Ornamental Fish Market in Changsha, Hunan Province, China.....
The same source also supplied the C. sterbai & C. panda, in their other Corydoras mitochondrial DNA papers.

cheers Darrel

Eric, that phylogenetic position would be relatively ok (but with a lot of missing species and lineages) but not for arcuatus imo.

It looks like they had granti

Lineage 8 (arcuatus) and lineage 9 (granti) are both closer genetically to lineage 7 (rabauti, or was it zygatus?) than to lineage 6 (natteri). That's why I said it works either way... unless you b think arcuatus is not lineage 8.

Cheers, Eric
