Sighting of Ancistrus aff. ranunculus at Finatics in Richland, WA. Any info?

Post by bekateen »

Just stopped by Finatics Tropical Fish in Richland, WA. What a wonderful selection of plecos and corys they had.
20190719_133828.jpg
The best fish I saw was a single (shown above). Alas, they had only one specimen but it was a beauty - jet black body covered with homogeneously sized pinpoint white spots. Probably a female. Gorgeous fish. I wish they had more than one. This came in as a contaminant with a group of 10 .
Exactly this fish: Image
I can't find much info about in the forums here. Does anybody have more info?

Cheers, Eric

It's Latin for 'little frog'. The name alone would make it worth getting ;-)
(Yeah, I know, not much help here...)

I would have gotten it myself! You show more restraint that I do when I see something nice in a fish store! :d

Chuck, there was only one fish. What good does that do me?

Doesn't do any good to have just one.... but there is always hope you may get ahold of another too some day!

Take care,

True. If I knew where this LFS got the fish (i.e., the wholesaler), that may own more doors too.

Did you say you read German?
http://www.l-welse.com/reviewpost/showp ... product/45

The "little frog" part apparently loosely translates into German and back to English as "tadpole pleco" :)
I think I need a bigger tank so I can get me some of these...

Cheers,

Karin

Never mind, that's just ancistrus ranunculus. The "aff". means it's likely related but not actually the same. Learn something new every day..

I have 4 of these at home, 2 males and 2 females. All spotted like yours. Hoping to breed them later this year.

Ancistrus ranunculus can be easily distinguished from Ancistrus sp. L255, their spots are very different. I have both species :icon-wink:

Here is my Ancistrus sp. L255.
