Interesting fish. What do you know about this specimen? Catch location? No strong body stripes? ( as in other Platydoras)

Thanks.

The closest described species is , both in appearance and location (same river system). But I'm being told on Facebook that this is not the same.

p. costatus gets 6.3"? This guy is already about 8 " and they get to about 14".

I've heard there are other differences also. But to the issue of size, is 14" a wild measurement or in captivity? Captive raised fosh often exceed wild caught max SL.

Not sure if this fish came from the same place I got mine (I assume it did) but the vendor was offering wild-caught fish up to 12". The range offered was 8-12".

Really happy with this species. A good medium-sized fish that stays small enough to be realistically kept by hobbyists, as opposed to the much larger Oxydoras, Pterodoras etc.

Thanks for this info on the sizes of wild caught fish. I presume the seller lists the size as TL, not SL. Do you know?

If so, and assuming seller isn't exaggerating, I'd estimate from photos that the tail adds another 15%-20% to length, which would then "ballpark" SL around 10".

Rechecked their website. They actually list 2 size options, 7-8" or 9.5-12.5", they're not specific about SL or TL.

I ordered the 7-8" size and while I didn't measure it before adding it to the tank if I hold a tape measure up to the front of the tank (not very accurate I know) it looks to be a solid 9" TL. I suppose that doesn't mean much though considering they offer a range of sizes from 7-12.5".

They have been recorded up to 10.7" SL (Pioski et al., 2008), and that was based on a very small number of specimens, so I'm sure they get bigger.

Vendors rarely use SL as far as I know, so the sizes offered definitely fit the species.

Think the DNA looks different in these two spp. I will consult Mols book when I get home. I think this fellow could have it's own species entry...

Ah ... there's indeed a Platydoras sp. "Maroni" (=Marowijne) in Arce et al. (2017).

Sorry, but I'm having trouble finding this resource. Do you mean the 2013 paper (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ympev.2013.02.021)? I see Platydoras sp. 'Maroni' there.

If not, which paper is this?

Thanks, Eric

Jools, I reviewed the Arce (2013) paper and indeed there is a Platydoras sp. `Maroni` that is distinct from P. costatus. I've created a CLOG entry for it.

FWIW, on FaceBook, Mark Henry Sabaj says this `shallow scute` Platydoras may be Platydoras helicophilus, which was also described from the Maroni and has shallower scutes than P. costatus; currently, P. helicophilus is synonymized with P. costatus.

Great stuff, if you get a picture of the fish side on without much reflection or other fish in the shot it'd be great to put in the cat-elog to show the fish in portrait.
