Head looks not pronounced enough to be male for me. Body looks round, too. The interopercularodontodes are a little in between. If this is a big specimen of 10 inches or more I would say female. If it is still smaller, it might just grow a more angular / edged head and be a nice male though.

The description of a male L14 having the square jaw/head and the female having the more pointed jaw/head shape is actually backwards.... the female has the square jaw shape and the male is more pointed! viewtopic.php?f=5&t=44635&p=304112&hilit=l14#p304112 The larger L14 with the pointed head is male and the square shaped head is female..... unfortunetly during a power outage I lost the female but I was at least able to prove it was a female......

Take care,
Chuck

Maybe Headshape is not a reliable indicator at all, then?

It seemed to be to me...... I should also point out that the females where about 12" and 13" TL and the male is 16" TL. Had them for many years and they grow very little if any. I have 2 that I bought at about 2" that are about 9" now.... got them at the same time I did the larger ones. I haven't checked to see what sex they look like yet.

Take care,
Chuck

I was going to try and take some pictures of my smaller L14's and see if I could sex them...… but this is what I found when I looked in their tank today...… I will wait till they are done.

Chuck, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you have a male and a female there. Sexing accomplished. You're welcome. :)) :)) :))

Good luck with this spawn,
Eric ;-)

Unfortunately they did not spawn.... I seen before lights out they where not in the same cave anymore. Maybe they where just practicing and the real thing will be down the road.... I hope anyways!

Take care,
Chuck
