Synodontis age

Post by spiny »

One of my friends has a huge aquarium of about 250 gallons/1000 liters. One of its inhabitants is a beautiful blackisk Synodontis, which have been in his aquariums for around 35 years!

Anyone know how old they can get?

Need to be a little more specific about which synodontis, even then I could only give a rough estimate.

I think 20+ years is well documented for Synodontis. I haven't come across reports of 35 years before, but it doesn't really surprise me. It is apparently well documented that one of the koi in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan lived to more than a century. With good care, captive fish can live for much, much longer than they would in the wild.

(Of course, for every captive fish that exceeds its typical life-span in nature, another thousand die a premature death, but that's another topic.)

I have a decorus(since 1980), brichardi(since 1980), zambiensis sp.?(since 1981), and lost an alberti(since 1982) in the August, 2003 blackout.

zambiensis

Post by Tom »

Can't post pics. The zambiensis( only have 1 ) is 8-9", and marbled( kind of like a giant schoutedeni ). I realise the name zambiensis has been used on 4 or 5 different species. In Poll's book it is a solid color fish. I'll try to post pics on a friend's computer.

Take care,
Tom

I can add to this list with a few Mochokiella paynee wich I bought in the summer of 1986, already at least 2 years old or so.
In essential Mochokiella is a small Synodontis, sort of.

And I bought a group of 5 Synodontis nigriventris back in May 1984, three of whom still survive as up today, in Pectorale's smaller tank......
Plan B should not automatically be twice as much explosives as Plan A
