Hemibagrus wyckii with Parachromis Dovii ?
Hi all!
I am curios to se what you think of this.
I have a couple of Parachromis Dovii and one female extra.
Now does anyone think its possible to have Hemibagrus wyckii in the same tank with those?
Before you answer be sure you now what kind of cichlid i am talking about.
The Hemibagrus wyckii is about 15 cm.
The Dovii male is 21 cm
dovii female 15 cm
other female 13 cm
Is the combination possible.
The tank is 540 l big
Appretiate answers.
Best regards
Daniel

I second HH. While large pimelodids tend to be safe with other fishes that they can not swallow, this is not true with Hemibagrus. If a tankmate is too big for a Hemibagrus to swallow, he/she will bite the other fish and bully it until it is miserable or dead.

Yes thats correct.
But the thing is that Dovii is regarded to be the most aggressive cichlid of all.
And does the catfish have the guts to bite a fish its get beaten up by?
The Hemibargus is 15 cm the Doviimale 21 cm.
The Dovii would certainly be the stongest fish and fastest aswell...
Actually im am more concerned about the hemibargus getting beaten than the oposite.
On the other hand i have never owned a catfish like this.
And when i saw it in the store i felt that i just GOT TO HAVE IT!

I find that size does not matter that much for Hemibagrus. It'll beat the dovii to death. And does the catfish have the guts to bite a fish its get beaten up by?
Don't forget that the catfish can hide fairly easily while being chased about during the day, but the dovii has to sleep (usually out in the open) at night (when the catfish is active), and that's when its ordeal begins.

P. dovii may be one of the most aggressive cichlids (I personally think that a large pavon (Cichla sp) would easily take out a P. dovii in a fight), but Hemibagrus are considered the most aggressive FRESHWATER FISH in the world. As was pointed out, putting these two together can only lead to disaster. The cichlid might kill the catfish and the catfish might kill the cichlid, but either way you will end up with dead fish if you put these two titans together.

Oh yes, they can, given the proper care. You can expect closer to 40-50 cm in the aquarium, though. How large does this killer ususally become?
I mean every Hemibagrus cant be 70 cm.
They are already sexually mature at that size. If you mean to ask if they will stop growing after that, the answer is no.Is 30 cm a grown adult?
YES!
I got him!!
So now he is temporarily living together with 3 cihlids 2 Cichlasoma Festae and 1 convict female in a 160 liters tank. They are about 6-8 cm size.
So what do i feed him with?
Is he going to eat these fishes directly?
Are he going to take an other food than fishes?
Best regards

4 days have now gone and he hasnt touched any other fish yet.
And he havent taken any other food either.
He is actually sleeping all day an as soon as i turn the lights off he is starting to move around in the tank.
Am i supposed to give him food at night or is he eventually going to eat the fishes that are in the tank together with him now?
Best regards

Hemibagrus Wyckii update
Hi there!
My Wyckii is currently living now in a 360 liters tank together with 2 Cichlasoma Festae.
So far everything is working out quite fine at least for the Wyckii.
I usually feed him with a lot of sinking pellets and shrimps so he has
not touched the other fishes yet.
But he has eaten some live food aswell about 8 tetras and one rainbowfish so far.
He has grown a LOT since i got him and ill guess he is about 22-25cm.
So far as long as the cihlids doesnt comes near him he doesnt seem bother to much about them
Thats in daylight then of course....
At night he really is the black death swimming around the tank and scares the shit
out of the other 2 fishes and they have learned the hard way that they better hide
or swim very fast when he is around...
He is definately the boss in the tank.
At this stage i would not even consider to try to put him in the Doviitank
because my male Dovii is totally insane and very aggressive against any other fish.
So putting these to together will only get me a dead fish left i suppose.
But he is a really cool fish.
Im going to try put up some pictures of him later today.
