Bristlenose does'nt eat cucumbers?

Post by squid »

Just got myself 3 pcs albino bristlenose plecos, i added a slice of cucumber and after 2 daysnthey did not seem to touch it. Is it possible for bristlenose not to recognize cucumber as food ? I have some
Old blue eyed ones in another tank and they finish up cucumbers quite fast. Just curious about the new ones i got.

if they have never had it before it may take them a few times to start eating it. blanching it also works really well especially when they're getting used to cucumber or other veggies

i'll try to stick an algae wafer into the cucumber.

Three thoughts:
1) They may not like cucumber. Mine will strip the skin from cucumber and leave the flesh behind.
2) They may need time to realize it's food, as mentioned.
3) They may want it to soften a lot. I wasn't having any luck with spinach for my BN and then I left a leaf in too long, it turned brown, and the BN came out in the middle of the day (which he never does) and sat there death-rolling on the spinach until the whole leaf was gone.

If you fed them with something else and they are not hungry, they will not eat the cucumber. Give it to them when they are really hungry. And do they actually eat something else - if not then they are sick and problem is different !

thanks!! i did notice the algae on the glass has been cleared.
not sure if my severum is eating the cucumbers too? i've noticed the middle part of the cucumber with the seeds will be gone but the some of the flesh and the skin will still be there.

i've also been feeding my Severums Hikari cichlid excel sinking.
not sure though if there will be some leftover for my new Bns to eat.

by the way noticed they are a little pale , is it normal for Albino Bns to be this pale?
my blue eyed ones are nice golden color.

I tried feeding my Super Red Bristlenose cucumber as well and they just nibbled on it for a whole day. I seen on You tube someone feeding them French cut green beans. I got a can of green beans and the plecos ate that like it was candy. If you try it get the French cut style since they are already cut and no seeds. Just rinse a few and let them sink to the bottom.

None of my bristlenoses have ever shown the slightest interest in cucumber, but they fall on courgette (zucchini) like it’s crack cocaine. I’m half-sure they’d take it from my fingers if I offered it that way...
