Need help with aquarium weight and stand

Post by MichaelItelf »

Hi I need a bit of advice.i bought a 240 litre fish tank last year and have had nothing but problems with it. Water keeps leaking out of the hood and has water damaged the stand.i am going to buy a sideboard for it but dont know how strong the sideboard needs to be in order to hold the tanks weight. I was wondering if anybody could give me a bit of advice as to what weight the tank would be and what would be the minimum weight that the sideboard would have to be able to hold? Thanks in advance ☺

1 liter of water = 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs). So a full 240 gallon tank weighs 240 kg (528 lbs) if it were completely full (which it won't be) and held only water (which isn't true). So add some weight to account for the substrate, etc. I normally also assume the listed weight limits on shelving is only approximate, so I'd probably not buy a shelf that said it could hold exactly the weight I calculated. Since I have to buy shelving listed by pounds that's my experience - and I would feel safe buying a stand rated for 800 lbs for this tank.

Start with a 60 * 30 * 30 cm - that's 54 liters of water weights 80 kilograms, including hood and substrate.

Your tank is 240 liters, that's 4.something times 54. So your tank wil weigh som 4 * 80 kilos and a bit, that's 330 to 350 KG

The 800 lbs Lycosid mentioned is 360 kg. Quite close
