Picked up some nice yellow corys. Maybe napoensis.

Post by bekateen »

Hi All,

I was looking for more corys for work and found a group of seven elegans-type fish being sold at LFS as "elegant corys." There was only one adult male in the group. But he stood out because of (1) bright yellow body color, (2) spiked, elongate and black-topped dorsal fin, and (3) long tail (not "long-fin" like mutant, but just longer than typical corys of same size).

The closest ID I received online (from Coryman and an ichthyologist) is . Others suggested .

I may have subadult males in the group. I hope so because I don't want 1 male and 6 females. And if they breed, I hope the babies are as yellow as the adults.

Cheers, Eric

Nice fish Eric! I haven't met this kind of pattern with yellow tint again. Hope you get lucky with gender and achieve a nice breeding group.
Last week i also bought a small group of elegans-type (maybe napoensis) who were sold as san juan cory. Mine have no yellow tint. Unfortunately there were only three left, and as i guessed are 2m and 1f, i decided to give it a shot. I' ll manage to get some pictures the next days, so maybe somebody could help with identification and gender.
Hope i get lucky, too. :)

Cheers, Chris

Nice find. Many catfish in the wild are yellowish, but loose their color in captivity. Whether due to diet or something else, I couldn't say

But if the yellow would indeed breed true, that would make them very special indeed!!

Yes, I'm familiar with the phenomena in the wild. But I've never seen fish in a LFS still retaining that temporary color.

I'll be tickled pink if the babies are yellow too. :-)

What's up Eric? Yes it has been a little while. Went thru a couple personal issues with family, work, and kids in college. Everything is back on track and I am getting back to what I love. My bro is in Boston, MA. I am going to see if I can get some pictures of his schools of cory cats. He really had some nice ones.

That yellow color will hold. I have 2 just like yours in my 125g. I bought them over a year ago in a group of 8 elegant. Mine actually have developed more yellow once they settled in after the quarantine. I'll try and post a photo if the cooperate.
