Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
I'm just looking at booking the hotel and convention, does anyone know what time things start on the Friday? I am thinking of arriving late Thursday night, to save me having to leave early to drive up on the Friday.

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
Friday evening is the official start, there are usually a few folks around on Thursday evening and organisers (like me) will be floating around from then until until Friday evening collecting speakers and the like. If you head out Friday morning, most folks tend to meet at the hotel or Pier Aquatics. There are probably some folks still there from last year.
Saturday morning is late start/hit the LFS (Pier, Aqualife in the main) and the vendor room is open. Talks start around lunchtime Saturday and continue until late afternoon Sunday.
@CoryWally is the convention manager, perhaps he can give more details in due course.

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
Sounds good, thanks Jools, that's enough information for me to work with.
I was thinking if I arrived on Thursday night I could go to Pier on the Friday morning, if nothing was happening. It's been 18 months or more since I was last there, long overdue a visit!
Hopefully I'll have a few more tanks to fill up by then.

Just sent the booking form off, all I need to do now is sort out a fish room or at least a couple extra tanks to bring some fish back with me!

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
Not long to go, I'm looking forward to this, especially now I have three new tanks for anything I buy at the convention, currently in the living room, until my fish room is finished. Three small goldfish are keeping the filters busy for now.
The tanks are only small 18*12*12 inches, but my fish room should be ready by late summer, I'll start a new thread about that when the building work finishes, and I can start building it out.
Who else is coming to the convention?

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
I'm really looking forward to it; it seems to have a beneficial effect on me and my catfish!
Last year I bought a baby L427 barely an inch long, it's now a chunky 5"SL and doing very well!
Last year I also got back home to find my Corydoras burgessi had spawned for the first time on convention weekend; this year it was the turn of my Corydoras oiapoquensis and they spawned for the first time last week.
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
Hi Everyone, with the convention coming up very soon, and having never bought fish at an event like this before I had a question about keeping the fish you buy or sell well looked after.
Do you bring a mature filter with you, to keep in the tub/tank in your room, or do you just perform a couple water changes each day?
I'm asking as if I bring a mature filter, it will likely be 24-48 hours before I have some fish in with the filter, meaning the bacteria may well have died back and cause a small cycle again, losing the benefit of bringing a mature filter?

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
I use a large cooler with a filter and a heater. Easy to move than a tank - I have used tanks but always smaller plastic ones.
The water at the venue is fine for water changes. I've always used a new or clean filter - it's more about oxygenation than about water purification.

There are some very nice fishes in Pier, really one of the best best selections in years. Hoping to get to Aqualife tomorrow too as it is never disappointing too. Will post pics...

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
A great event, I came back with some nice fish too .
As far as I can tell, I think they are sp. marbled rather than apithanos as the barbels are all pure white, apparently apithanos will often have black patches on the barbels. Ancistrus sp. 'Red Mosaic' and/or 'Cheese Creek' from Danny

Re: Catfish Study Group Convention 2018
Thanks Eric, most of the fish were from Pier, but the Ancistrus were from the convention.
I think Pier had recently had big imports from S. America, Africa, and Asia just a few weeks before the convention, there were so many good fish, if my fish room was ready I'd have probably needed a truck to bring back everything I wanted!

Thanks Jac, can I ask what makes you say that? Are they too big to be marbled, or am I reading too much into the colouration of the barbels, and should focus more on the overall patterning?

Cracking fish. As jac says these are true Pseudohemiodon apithanos. The marbled one has a rounded rather than triangular head.
Did you miss Norman's talk on these? It was really good.
Good to meet some of you guys. Hopefully will be there next year.

Thanks for the help with the ID. I did see Norman's talk, I may have missed or confused something but not all of the sp. Marbled pictures appeared to have rounded heads.
It's not a family I'm familiar with, so I'm happy to go with the ID which has been suggested. Either way they are really nice fish!
I should be there next year too, it was great to meet everyone.
