fish are breathing rather fast

Post by StiffMeister »

Guys,
yesterday ive bought me some new fish. Its a H. plecostomoides, an albino and some unknown species. also 2 ramirezi of around 2 cm. But when i look in the tank i notice that the fish are breathing quite fast. i dont really know if thats normal with such young fish ( they all all quite young). the fish do seem to be healthy and are acting normally ( eat, no strange behaviour) and the water values are as following:
- dGH: 14
- dKH: 10
- PH: 7,2
Havent got CO2 test yet...
I do have quite a lot of lants in the tank and there cant be too much fish ( 30 cm on 33G).
Could this be an oxygen problem? if i insert a oxygen stone (donno the english word lol) wouldt this lower the CO2 in the tank and thereby make the plants grow less? what could this be and what should i do?

You say the water parameters are fine, but you don't mention ammonia or nitrite readings... With the fish being new additions, I would worry about gill flukes or other such problems. A quarantine tank is ALWAYS a good idea when you buy new fish, as it will be detrimental to plants and the other fish you already had if these fish are infested with some nasty bug, both the introduction of said bug, and having to treat them all, if that's the case.

They may just be too excited about their new home.. give them some time to get acclimated first..

yeah, think that must be it. have done some tests on NO2 and NO3 and all seem to be just fine. they arent getting to the surface for air either, so it wont be oxygen i guess. How long should this acclimatisation take? 1 week in total?
