What's the record for consecutive days spawning in your corys?
Hi All,
On July 14th, my Corydoras venezuelanus spawned for the first time, giving me about 160 eggs. I was out of town from the 17th - 19th of July, but when I returned on the 19th, there was a fresh batch of eggs that day. Every day since then (as best I can recall to the earliest days, but definitely in all of late July and all of August), they spawned again and again. I counted 33 consecutive days of egg-laying in this group of 11 fish in a 10 gallon tank. Yesterday, on the day of the solar eclipse, they took a day off - not because it was dark (they have a light on their tank), so their run stopped at 33 days. But today, what would have been day 35, they're back at it.
Almost every day, they don't start spawning until about 9-10 AM (a few hours after lights on), and they are usually done by 12noon or 1 PM.
One thing that was odd about the last few days was this - they did a normal (big) spawn on the morning of day 33, but then they did another spawn late that afternoon. Perhaps that second spawn on day 33 explains why they didn't spawn on day 34? Just a possibility.
Cheers, Eric

Wow! You must be doing something right. I've never had Corydoras spawn for more than one day, with at least a week between spawns.

I might be rapidly over-run! I'm oddly enjoying the slow breeding rate and low survival percentage of my as I have too many tanks already! My other Cory species are not playing at all...

Eric,
I need your venezuelanus to have a word with mine. They spawned around this time last year and haven't done bupkis since...

Scraped some older eggs off the glass this morning, and apparently they were more ripe than I realized. Watch them pop like popcorn as the babies burst out of their eggs. Enjoy!

Eric,
Very cool video! I am wondering are you raising all of the fry from your spawns, and if so how much tank space is it going to take to get them to a sellable size?
Thanks Andy

Re: What's the record for consecutive days spawning in your corys?
Hi Kd67,
I am recovering all the eggs, and dumping them into a 10 gal tank with nothing else except a few shrimp (no other fish). I'm not doing anything special to ensure the eggs hatch (no meth blue, no alter cones). I'm feeding crushed flakes and microworms or banana worms 2x daily. I have at least 200 babies in the tank. The biggest are about 1/4 inch SL and I need to start thinning them out, moving the largest to other tanks. I think the largest babies are now eating the most recent hatchlings because I'm not seeing many 2-3 day old babies in the tank like I used to.
Cheers, Eric
