Doradid - Not sure what
A seller has this fish listed as "Platydoras spec." however I am 95% sure this is not a Platydoras. I've browsed Doradids, and found species with similar fins but haven't been able to match up the body with the barbels.
Any help?

I would be 100 % certain it is not Platydoras. Can't help you to the name though. But if the shop was in the Netherlands - I woul go and get them all

Interestingly the fish does not have branched barbels

Re: Doradid - Not sure what
If you look very carefully, it does have branched barbels. I'm inclined to think this is a juvenile .

According to the sellers page, the fish is roughly 7" long. I am likely going to buy it - quite expensive but very interesting.

If so (and it looks a good match) this is the first time I've seen one alive.

Re: Doradid - Not sure what
Alright, so I see that fish grows to 8.3". I've got a 65 gallon with a striped raphael, and I'm looking to add a few more of them to it.
Do you think 3 striped Raphael and 2 of those guys would go well? I have to order at least 2, and they are $120 a piece.

Re: Doradid - Not sure what
If this fish grow s to 8.3" & is 7" already surely it is an adult rather than juvenile? I think c.crocodili has a longer flatter adipose & eyes more towards the top of the head rather than the small rounded adipose & eyes on the side of the head.
Do we know the provenance of the fish?

Re: Doradid - Not sure what
The fish are already larger than the size listed for those fish, and they do not seem to have the striping. The seller is asking $120USD a piece for them - worth it? I'm thinking of getting them just to see what they end up being.

Re: Doradid - Not sure what
Adult P. costatus may lose the pale stripes seen in juveniles.
160 mm SL equates to about 7.5" total length, so the sizing is correct.

Hm, alright. I appreciate your ID. Do you think it's worth the price tag?
