blue eyed bristlenose

picked up a blue eyed gold bristlenose today. never seen them before are they common? If bred do they always pass on the blue eyes?

- they are pretty common, but less common than the regulars, albino, etc.

L144 will not be the fish they have. From what i understand the true L144 was rarely exported. All of the fish that are seen in the hobby tend to be the "blue eyed" cirrhosus.

You are absolutely right. Real L144 probably never existed since only a single male was ever imported.


I was referring to the golden version of "common bristle nose" that has no red eyes. It is widely called L144 in Europe - though this is not right.

It does make me wonder if the more we breed plecos, if other groups will get the "non-red eye" version bred like cirrhosus? Albino blue eyed L201

it was bought as a ' blue eyed gold bristlenose L144'.From what I have read I understand this is the name they are usually given but it is not correct? First time I had seen that at the LFS and bought one home.

Yes, anything named L144 is not correct. But breeders, wholesalers and retailers use that name either to encourage sales or out of ignorance.

well, it was only imported one yellow (xanthoristic) male, this is afaik correct.
But there were more normally coloured ones imported in the same batch and with these this yellow trait was crossed back. So real L 144 did exist for sure.
However, I don't know if this strain still exists. Many years back I heard that there were some in Switzerland.

The xanthoristic Ancistrus sp. that you can find in the trade was linebred from the common bristlenose just as the albinos.

So people gave an xanthoristic individual his own l-number. That's what I was referring to. Just wanted to make my point, that there was no species out in the wild consisting of golden ancistrus. It was one miscolored specimen.

They are not as common as the rest. I haven't seen them around much. I think i would pay more for the blue eyes, they're pretty cool.

No, they are not as common as the standard and the albinos, and i do agree they are cooler. They look amazing with longfins as well.

ive not seen them in the long finned variety. She is very pleasant to look at and is out on view quite a bit.
