I believe these are B. balunga.panaque wrote: This 5cm specimen was caught in a shallow pool on the side of a 2m wide stream. I don't know the species - suggestions welcome!
This 14cm speciemen may be the same species or not. It was caught in a local fisherman's net in a deep (>2m) section of the main river

...and I believe the head shape of these indicate B. unimaculata instead of B. ocellata.panaque wrote:

A few more cyprinids....
Systomus cf banksi???
I'm doubtful because I can only see one pair of barbels (and I have browsed though a lot of my photos)
Systomus sealei
Cyclocheilichthys sp (C. armatus maybe?)
Barbonymus sp.?

Some more cyprinids (in this part of the world, it seems there are always more cyprinids...)
Hampala macrolepidota (apologies for background clutter)
Tor sp.
Osteochilus chini

Re: Sungai Setulang, Kalimantan Utara
Anyone got any thoughts on the cyprinids in the previous posts?
On to the Balitoridae... Great little fish to observe and photograph in their natural habitat.
Gastromyzon cf ornaticauda
Gastromyzon cf lepidogaster
Adult:
Sub-adult:
Protomyzon griswoldi (I think)
That is the lot I think. I have some underwater videos as well which I'll post once I've got round to editing them.

This is actually as benign as it gets because it had been exceptionally dry. After rain, the river rises by several meters and turns into a raging brown torrent within a few hours.bekateen wrote:Wow, that current in the Gastromyzon video must be pretty strong!

Impressive. I was just noticing how in you video the fishes' tails were curling in the current. Thanks for the info.
