Catfishes from Iquitos/Nauta Peru
Catfishes from Iquitos/Nauta Peru
Folks,
Back in October we spent some time collecting in the Nauta/Iquitos area, and came across a number of catfishes that I am having some trouble identifying. If anyone cares to comment on our ID, or add where we are missing ID's, I would very much appreciate it! As not to swamp you, I will only post a few pics. I believe we caught somewhere around 120ish species.
Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for that, I discounted P. blochii due to the lack of pigmentation, but I see on your link that this is extremely variable.

Hmm, I like Auchenipterus brachyurus, thank you! There doesn't seem to be much out there about this genus, may I ask how you came to that conclusion?
Yes, S. lima is it, I knew it was a common fish, I just couldn't for the life of me remember which one.
Thanks again for your help.

Sorry I can not help in identifying any of them that have not been identified so far. But thanks for the post and thanks to those that are helping give those of us that don't know an education.

Re: Catfishes from Iquitos/Nauta Peru
SSmith, is there at least some faint patterning on the first pimelodid? Because although I like Silurius's id., it sure looks like it could be something like P. pohli or P. fur. At least some patterning would allay some of my equivocation.

Both P. fur and P. pohli are only known much further south of the Amazon River drainage (in the Rio São Francisco drainage).

Re: Catfishes from Iquitos/Nauta Peru
Thanks Silurus, Im aware. And, as Im sure you know, stranger things have happened. Just hoping SSmith could maybe post another pic showing some patterning. I've never seen a pure 'platinum' P. blochii before (which I would not say is out of the realm of possibility either).

I will have to dig through many, many, photos, but I will check!naturalart wrote:Thanks Silurus, Im aware. And, as Im sure you know, stranger things have happened. Edit:
I actually got lucky and found the original raw files pretty quick. There appears to be absolutely no pigmentation outside of the silvery sheen. I didn't upload any more pics because they really look exactly same as the one I uploaded.
