Auchenipterids from Rio Itaya, Peru
Hi,
I found a few old pictures of our tour to Rio Itaya, in a small tributary we found these (all in the same trunk), one more beautiful than the other :
No. 1
No. 2
No. 3
No. 3
No. 3
No. 4.1
No. 4.2
No. 4.3
Any idea what those could be ?!
Cheers,

Hi Karsten
Great photos!
Fish 1 reminds me of the few Tatia variations which were seen a year or so ago at Pier and others.
Fish 2 - ?
Fish 3 - ?
Fish 4 (pic 2) - reminds me of . Are you sure photos 1 and 3 are the same fish? They look more like Pseudopimelodidae?
HTH

Hi,
thanks for your feedback.
I have updated the subscripts of the different Nos. 4.
This was three years ago and all I can say that all these pics were taking within a few minutes.
No. 4.2 is something different, you can see the tip of the caudal fin in pic 4.1.
Cheers,

no, not really sure, but I think that it's the same, in fact picture 4.3 was taken just after 4.1 and 4.2 was the last pic taken.Martin S wrote:Are you sure photos 1 and 3 are the same fish? They look more like Pseudopimelodidae?

Hi,
two more from Itaya that are certainly no auchenipterids:
No. 5
No. 5
No. 6: Pimelodus ornatus
All from the river itself.
If it's possible to track them down to species level you can use the pics for your DB if you want.

I'd hazard a guess that 4.1 and 4.3 are B. ranius and 4.2 is T. galeatus.

That's weird. They were here earlier today... And if you use the "quote" function for Karsten's first post, the links are still there. Where did the pictures go?kruseman wrote:I can't see any pictures ?
Well, I tried visiting the www.l-welse.com website directly and my browser just spins and spins, trying to load; after a few seconds I get a "This page can't be displayed" response, even for the main website. So maybe the website is temporarily down or not responding.

Re: Auchenipterids from Rio Itaya, Peru
I am not sure of what species they are, but one group has a forked tail and the other not, plus other traits that are similar, but not exact. This would mean they are not all the same species. I am sure with closer examination that would prove they are not the same species. Catfish have many traits that can vary from one species to the next, even from the same genus, so trying to identify a fish from a photograph can be difficult if not impossible, especially with similar looking species, a scientific comparison must be made by a trained professional. Just though I would through that out to you all!
