Any thoughts on an ID?

Post by nikirushka »

I've just fetched this little fellow home and I'm a bit stumped!

He's about 6" long at the moment but very skinny so possibly stunted. When I let him out into the tank, He held his dorsal fin up for just a moment and I think there was a tinge of red along the top of it, and I can see a faint hint of red in all his other fins, too. His tail fin has slight extensions top and bottom. The reddish patch on his side I think is a mild injury rather than colouration, he was in with some parrots and one was guarding a hollow log ornament thingy so he might have had a bump from it.

I'm leaning towards some sort of hypostomus possibly but I've been trawling the pics on here and I'm none the wiser!

Thanks :)

Agree with Silurus
Species likely to be Pardalis
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

Hmm, could be a pardalis, looking at some of the juvenile pics on here. Definitely not a gibbi though. I've not seen a pardalis with this colouration before, all the juvies round here are the typical dark grey colour even at a couple of inches long, and this fish is likely to have come from somewhere local.

It's ok if it is one though, I've got the tank space to house it for a long time now and I can always upgrade later. I'd like to anyway. I've had an adult before so I'm not unfamiliar with how hefty they get!
