Ichthyologist who stung himself with madtom spp. venom

Post by Jools »

Hi All,

Both HH and I recall reading a post about, I think, an ichthyologist working with spp. who stung himself and recorded the relative pain of various species. Can anyone remember who this was, what paper or even find the post?

Cheers,

Jools

No, I had a look at that one and a couple of others. Basically I am looking for something that mentions the name of the researcher.

Is it this paper (or at least cited in this paper)?
William S. Birkhead. 1972. Toxicity of Stings of Ariid and Ictalurid Catfishes. Copeia, 1972, No. 4 (Dec. 29, 1972), pp. 790-807

In this paper, both Reed and Taylor are cited separately as describing stings by fish. I couldn't check these primary sources to see if they were the people stung.

(I found it at JSTOR; sorry I'm on my phone and can't retrieve the paper)

I just put some papers on venomous catfish into dropbox @jools (in a file called venomous catfish) , I do not think it is what you are looking for but the Mckinstry paper has many sting accounts but from different people. It does record the relative pain level and fish species when possible.

Thanks to Mike Hardman, I've found it was in "A Revision of the Catfish Genus Noturus Rafinesque with an Analysis of Higher Groups in the Ictaluridae" by Taylor, William Ralph. 1969.

Cheers,

Although a scan through it doesn't appear to mention self stinging. There is a Birkhead reference I need to follow up...
