I once had a Red Tail named Paul
Who wouldn't eat nothing at all.
He always ate something,
Any old dumb thing.
Twelve hundred guppies in all.

there once was a Syno named dot
who put many cats on the spot
swam by confused Cory
and did suddenly flee
he groped my fin that little white snot

rotting leaves are home
to a plethora of cats
rooting for a snack

Candiru sure don't need a ladder
(If they had one, though, they might be gladder).
Whatever their genus,
They go up your penis
And start up a home in your bladder.

When Bronze Corydoras are lusting
What happens is simply disgusting.
The males release sperm,
Females drink it in turn
Then abandon the eggs like they're nothing.

My big Hemibagrus named Nemesis
Ruthlessly purges her enemies.
Don't want her to breed--
That's the last thing I need.
My worst fear is parthenogenesis

Three funny things happened in/around my tank last week; a mini-plague of tiny red spiders invaded, the rummynoses developed mild agoraphobia, and Ms Bristlenose decided it was time to become a woman, even if the young fish in question's beard hadn't fully grown in..

spider sprints 'cross glass
zebra danio follows
snapping empty jaws

rummynose sticks close
swimming in dusky shadow
of bright neon tetra

Ancistrus flirts, close
slapping tail and eyes bright, but
his lust is for food

To the lfs I went along,
bought two bumblebees for a song.
"Two inches!" He said.
But I came home and read
they grow up to eight inches long :|

This one relates to an FAQ in Shane's World.

My female cats (none could be finer)
Dispute this one point--it's quite minor.
They all will relate
That they don't menstruate.
They don't even have a vagina.

Look what happens when I turn my back for just a year! What talent has been shown here. With a year's passing I thought I woudl resurrect this topic and see if any newer members fancy trying their hand.

Haiku , Limerick or just plain old poetry!

Upside-down catfish,
Why do you invert yourself?
Do you like the view?

What is it about these fish that make me so poetic? *L*

Here's mine! :D

Waiting For Cory Babies

I await each waterchange
With baited, hopeful breath
Cool water changes twice a week
In comes the fresh, out goes the mess.

Yet my cories refuse to spawn.
They refuse to breed!
They've locked down their chastity belts
And giggle with far too much glee

My cories refuse to breed, I say!
They want to be chaste, it seems
They never care that baby cories
Are at the roots of my dreams

So I waterchange less, and waterchange more
With colder and colder each time
And yet they still sit and watch me relentless
And mock me even as I rhyme!

My cories refuse to breed, I say
And it's got me down in the pits
What can you do when nature's against you?
And babies just aren't in the chips?

And then, it came to me, and I finally saw
Why I have no cory babies to this day
All of the males were T-shaping each other
All of my cories are gay.
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

Jools, are you sure you're thinking of Haiku with that pivot word? That sounds more like Tanka...

I'm certainly no expert, but English-language poets often choose a short-long-short pattern of less than 17 syllables. Here's an example which won a big competition, all because of a catfish :D http://www.worldhaikureview.org/3-2/con ... hino.shtml 8)

In the same metrical form and with the same core concept of capturing a moment in time is the Senryu. Senryu need not have a seasonal reference (though I'm not sure, I think "catfish" is traditionally a seasonal reference in itself) and can be much less serious. Even as senryu I doubt mine are great poetry, but --

Mouth pressed to the glass
Very plump Plecostomus
Lets go -- did she burp?

To my suicidal cory' spotty.

Splash cory in net
Flick flash like rain
It falls to ground.
The falling flower
I saw drift to the branch
Was a butterfly.

Ok I'll try..

Patiently she waits
down beneath the calm surface
Delicious larvae

for my raphael cat, and

gracefully swimming
my own ageing group of ghosts
serene and eerie

err, something like that? :eusa-think: :)

Ill try a few

once a mere trickle
white waters rush over logs
tatia hold strong

Sift, forever swift
Row on row scales show
Swim helmed brothers

Latch on pray and hope
Waters gush over steep slope
Dart back to drakness

Silence the sun brings
Disappears with cats fears
Night life left and right

Great poems everyone!
I can stop keeping catfish whenever I want. I just don't think I'll ever want to do that...
