Hypancistrus Sp. L404 succesfull spawn
Hi all. This is my first post on this great forum. Have been here for ages, but haven't posted anything till now.
I didn't see many info about this particular species, so I decided to post this as my wild 404's have spawned a month ago.
I bought a group of 10 wc about 6 months ago from well known shop in UK. Different sizes, including 4 fully grown adults.
This is their home(top one). A 115(L)x45(D)x30(H) cm tank. Bottom one is for a group of 13 wc L134's .
Filtration Eheim 2217, Atman powerhead and a air driven sponge filter.
Nothing was happening till November. I noticed male trapping female in a cave in the middle of the current . After a week female left the cave leaving male in it. I didn't have any hopes for fry as this was the first attempt. It was a great surprise when I discovered after a week that the male is still in the cave guarding...wrigglers
After another week I took the cave out and left it in external breeding box.
4 days later took the cave out to see this
I managed to count 41 of these little stunners.
Added piece of wood and airstone and let them be till ready for first meal.
Now nearly a month later, 39 little bandits are constantly flying not swimming . Eating well on crushed Prima and spirulina. Once a week frozen Cyclops. They are not interested in cucumber nor in lettuce. Not even in courgette... Lost 2 of them for no reason. All other seem to be happy
And a short video ;)

Please, share your thoughts and ideas about this rare and very beautifull Hypancistrus
All the best

Congrats on the spawn.
Surprisingly high fry count for a hypan, is it possible two females spawned with that male?

Thanks four your comments guys.
The same male trapped again in the same cave, but nothing happened. Cave is empty now after 2 days...
Fry growing well and very fast
Will add some better pictures soon

I didn't see any movement after the female has been released. But I am not complaining about the numbers lol.Nabobmob1 wrote:Congrats on the spawn.

Re: Hypancistrus Sp. L404 succesfull spawn
Hi
The parents are approx 4 inch TL.
Unfortunately I lost 17 youngsters... Was finding 1 a day during the cleaning ... I dont know what caused this. Water parameters are fine. All fry look healthy and growing well, yet I lost so many of them. They are nearly 7 weeks old now. Eating Tetra prima, Spirulina New Era pellets and once a week frozen Cyclops.
Any ideas ?

Hello everybody and Happy New Year
Thanks for all the comments
I haven't posted for a while so here's a quick update.
27 fry still growing well. I haven't lost any more fish in last week, so I think things are getting better.
They are eating well , Spirulina being their favorite.
I got 6o l tank being prepared for them, tunning on mature Fluval 205 for a week now. Will transfer them to their new home in 2 weeks I think.
Few photos
They are over 2 cm TL now, and are growing fast

Re: Hypancistrus Sp. L404 succesfull spawn
Hi, a quick update.
I have finished setting up a small tank for L404 juveniles.
Its 54 l clearseal std tank. Runnig on Fluval 205 for 3 weeks now, few rocks, medium bogwood and 2 mosses from my shrimp tank(no longer needed as shrimps are gone)
What do you think ?
Little ones will go there in few days I think

Water parameters nearly exactly the same in both tanks, raised temp to 29 degrees now.

Re: Hypancistrus Sp. L404 succesfull spawn
hi all.
Just thought I'd show some photos of my adults here.
2 males currently on eggs
Biggest pair deep in the cave so the pictures of the smaller ones here.
You can see some juvies on few pictures as they escaped the breeding box.
PS Check the olive colour of one of the females.
PS2 Pictures taken with the flash so don't really show the true beauty of these rare Hypans .
Male1
Here with his female
Male 2
Female 1 with juvies
Female 2 (best colour )
Please share your thoughts

Wow such beautiful fish! You are obviously doing a great job not only getting them to thrive but to breed as well! I'm sorry you lost so many of your fry but please focus on the fact you got many of them to survive!
I truly commend you!

Re: Hypancistrus Sp. L404 succesfull spawn
Hi all
It's been a while since my last update.
L404's are breeding regularly. I got approx 70 small ones in different sizes. Recently decided to sell the whole group of adults so took a photo of my alpha male.
Here it is. Very hairy in size in approx 14 cm. Very beautiful fish imo.
What do you think ?
Thanks
Raf
