BN fin length?

I have a batch of fry (first batch) from a standard fin female and long fin male. Both standard colored. They threw mostly browns but i got albinos also, which is great! What i am curious of is when i will be able to tell the long fins in the batch?

Should be able to tell almost immediately. Like as soon as they're out and about.

Weird. I just got that answer on another forum. It looks like the entire batch is standard fins then! How weird since the father is long fin??

I'll differ - I have babies from short-fin x long-fin and couldn't see the difference right away. I did not make note of how soon the difference could be seen but it was definitely not immediately.

In my calico BNP, bred by lf man and sf female, I can tell the lf in about 10 days to 2 weeks. There'll be the odd one that looks like it's long fin where they are free swimming, but usually it takes a little while.

These are a little over a month old so by what two forums have said I should definitely be able to tell by now. So it looks, oddly enough, that I have all standard fins.

Post some pics. Is this your first clutch? What I have found is that the long fins don't compete well and don't grow as fast as the short fins. So if you have had die-offs, it's likely that the long fins died first.

If you have competition problems among juveniles, you might try what I do with corys - as they grow I sort them by size and separate the largest away from the rest, into another aquarium. This way, the largest don't outcompete the smallest. After a while, some of the "smalls" will begin to get too big for the rest; they too are removed so that the smalls are only competing with other "smalls".

I try to separate mine, but with 4 different pleco types breeding and a total of 6 tanks already, I'm pretty much out of room unless I start a fish room. That's not going to happen until I renovate the basement and build a new office.

You are fortunate and blessed to be burdened with so many spp. spawning at once.

Thanks, I normally only have 1 type spawning at a time. Not sure what's going on this year as everyone is getting into it.

This is my first batch and none have died. All growing about equally. I did talk to a BN specific breeder today and he said he waits until 3 months because they aren't able to determine fin length 100% until that point. He has sold some as standards prior to 3 months only to have the customers say what a great long fin BN they got.

I was moving them from a smaller tank to a larger tank with the same parameters (via API master test kit) just slightly different temperature so I floated them in the container before releasing them into the tank. I was able to count them at this time as well a total of 84 fry, no deaths thus far. 21 albino and 63 browns.

That's what I was thinking and why I snapped the pic of that one. I'm guessing there will be long fins in there. I came home at lunch today to a new batch! I think this is a long fin to long fin breeding this time. Only other one with torn fins from possible breeding.

The length of the tail and the large amount of white on it were my first indications of long-fin offspring of a short-fin male x long-fin female.
