#20 grit pool sand: Too coarse, sharp, and large?

Post by Filigree »

So I am relocating my corys to a 55 gallon and I need to choose a substrate. I have about 20lbs of CaribSea sand from Petsmart, but it is quite expensive, like a $1.44 per pound. I've heard of people using pool sand as an alternative. I went to Leslie's Pool Supplies and I noticed the size of the grains is quite large, at least compared to the CaribSea sand. I am concerned it might be too sharp and big for my corys. I was told it was 20 grit. The upside I've heard of larger sized grains is less risk of gas bubbles forming in the substrate, is that a problem with CaribSea Supernaturals? I don't have to do harm to save money, so I want to make sure pool sand in large grains sizes like that would be okay. I'll probably combine the sands, however I don't know if it is a good idea. Any insight form people who have experiences with these sands would be great, possibly some pictures. :-p
