L600 growth rate

Post by stinger16 »

Hi folks. I currently have a 6" L600 in a 4x2x2 . I'm just wondering what growth rate to expect from these fish? I've read they are slow growers but just looking for some people's experiences. Posted a pic and hopefully it'll work ok.
Thanks. Image

For the first couple of years, slow growth rate; once they get to about 3 inches, they will experience another growth spurt (at least for L114).
I have L600 from Jim K from the 2012 Catfish convention. They are about 2.5"-3" inches, so will see if they experience a growth spurt soon (like my L114).

My L600 grew tremendously in its first year (I've had him a year). He is now 6". The growth rate seems to have slowed down. So my experience seems to be opposite from Linus_Cello. I also got a 2" L114 at about the same time, and the growth rate on that one is equal to the L600, so it has slowed down also, now that it's 6" long.

Welcome to the forum!
I will start this post with a disclaimer. "The growth rate you experience may not be the same as those documented here."

This data is a summary of 7 years of personal observation. The gaps in the measurements are due to the reluctance to continually tear down the 300 gallon stock tub they were placed in after growing to 6". The tanks were lightly stocked for optimal growth.
I believe this chart is close to the maximum possible growth rate.

I think you might have a different variation of leopardus. A better photo and I could suggest a L number.
Very Nice no matter the number.

Thanks for the chart! That's also really helpful for planning for my L24's future.

Thank you for all replies.
Jim I will try and get a better photo but it's not easy he doesn't come out much. What L number are you thinking?

My male L114 growth:
1.6.2013 5 cm
1.2.2014 10 cm
9.10.2014 15.5 cm
15.11.2014 17 cm
26.1.2015 19 cm sold

I got my female L600 at a size of 19 cm 10 months ago and it's now 22-23 cm (no real measures yet, just a quess).

Your fish looks a bit like L427, but i'm not an expert.

Thanks Pete. I'm quite new to plecs and I do agree mine looks like L427 from the pics I just looked at.

I've added some updated pics taken a couple of months ago. I've since changed the gravel to sand for my geos so will get some better ones. Im thinking L427 rather than 600 now. What do you guys think?
