Canero black?

Post by KungFish »

I saw a fish labeled as "canero black" on a peruvian supplier's list (no pics), does anyone know what it could be? I don't know of any black cetopsids.

This thread has the same name and suggests 'some sort of Hepapterus or Rhamdia'
http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... hp?t=26546
Unfortunately the pix appear deleted.

One of those potentially troublesome parasitic 'vampire' catfish? I've seen reports of the less problematic species being kept but I've not really studied them well enough to say more than the name does exist as a derivation of a location.

The fish in the earlier thread was identified as Myoglanis koepckei.

This is why I hate made up names on wholesalers lists, notably those text only ones where Latin names are unheard of...too many are easily mistaken or can refer to multiple species.

So far I've had to id 4 of the fish species I've bought myself as shops have simply carried over dodgy or plainly incorrect names. I feel your pain.

I will be ordering some fish (with a retailer) from this supplier, should I take the risk and ask for some of these and hope that they are the peaceful heptapterid that they were in the other thread? I have the tank to house a group of small catfish, not a group of big hungry Cetopsis.

If in any doubt all - avoid.

It may only be a 1 in a 10000 chance of getting fish you can't house but then you have the problem of rehoming them, and if they arrive as real tank busters it can be a difficult job.

Can you ask the supplier for a picture perhaps? Maybe they're in a similar position of simply having a box of fish with a made up moniker, or having to make one up themselves. Maybe unlike you they don't really have the time or connections to get a a confirmed or 'near enkugh' id (unlikely but benefit of the doubt!).

Even of a species name is out the question then often a simple family will suffice in such circumstances as it will at least allow a reasonable guesstimate of max/min sizes and requirements.

Unfortunately it seems that If I ask for a photo I am expected to buy the fish.

What a rediculous situation!
- they haven't/won't/can't identify therefore no purchase
- they won't let you identify therefore no again no purchase

How are they to sell fish and money with such odd service and decision making?
...
You could try explaining that without an id then it most certainly won't lead to purchase so their apparent reluctance to help seems quite odd. Maybe send out a few of the names noted already, with PC profile links, and see what becomes of.

Tbh I don't see why they can't send a photo and I would pencil them in as a supplier to avoid if they fail to be of assistance once more.

Wait a minute. I believe I read the retailer's translation of the supplier's policies wrong. They said that If I ask for a photo of a fish that they do not have but CAN get, and they go out and get the fish to take a photo, I am expected to buy it. I'll ask for a photo of the "canero black", which they already have, and if I get one i'll post it here.

That makes more sense as its a zero cost sales promotion if it's already stocked, vs having to track down and possibly import the fish specially.

So… apparently the exporter has interpreted my request for a photo as a request for the species. The retailer just received the invoice for the order and sure enough, "CANERO BLACK" is right there. Well… he said they'll send a photo shortly, but it looks like I'll be providing a photo too, of whatever these things are. O_O

Good luck!

Hope it doesnt turn out to be a troublesome parasite or massive lump of a fish.
Don't know if I would be brave enough to buy such a mystery fish - its not exactly 'Corydoras 'unknown sp'' that at least gives a general clue (at worst pygmy cory to large Scleromystax or Brochis)

Might be luck and get a real beauty and/or rarity...*positive thoughts*

I'm hoping for Myoglanis.

I don't think they will be big fish, because they are the same price as other small fish I ordered, and cheaper than the big fish that were also in the order.

They are arriving at the retailer tomorrow! Expect pictures!

Not my own pics, I won't be getting them for 2-3 weeks. But THEN, expect more pics, this time from me.

It's probably better if you buy them direct from tedsfishroom.com (the aforementioned 'retailer'), considering I have no experience shipping fish.

:O Pic from this afternoon of them right out of the bag. Can't make out an I.D, but I can tell it's definitely not a cetopsid. Maybe cetopsorhamdia? Apparently there will be better pics soon.

I did see that post. However, I don't think they are myoglanis sp. 'peru' because I don't see a light colored stripe behind the head. But that might be because of the overall dark picture.

A couple observations on this fish having had them for a couple days. They aggregate together strongly, even in a relatively large tank (30 breeder). They group together in a ball under a piece of wood. They do not sit still when disturbed, so getting a shot in the tank they are in proved impossible... hence the crappy photo tank shots. They do come out for food. So far the tank has only gotten baby brine, but within 30 seconds of feeding the fish are out and searching.
