Looking for an ID- the owner doesn't know what it is but reports that it's well over a foot long.

The biggest one I've ever seen, so I think that such large ones in captivity are rare. Always have been interested in them. Never grew one past 6".

From reading and words of others, they are immensely aggressive territory-wise. Really up there.

I've seen quite a few of these "Black Sharks" which were 10 to 12 inches long.
They can live a long time in captivity.

Hi Victor,
12 inches is about the largest black sharks I've seen but I think they get larger. I would have to research a little to learn what their maximum size may be.
The only Cyprinids I've ever been very interested in are the minute Boraras spp and similarly small relatives. Those less than 1" appealed to me most and there are some real beauties among them.
Just the opposite of the large species you like so much.

There was some huge Black sharks not too far from you Victor if i remember rightly at Busch Gardens, Tampa, in the Hippo/Malawi exibit, here is a pic i just found of a big Labeo and a big Giraffe for good measure

Thanks Wayne. That's one place I have been skipping in my FL travels. Will keep in mind. I wonder though what black shark, who lives in SE Asia, is doing in an African exhibit. I guess it is a "multi-cultural" exhibit, pretty much like all of mine.

I haven't kept this particular species but almost all the Indian Labeo I have kept are insanely aggressive and will rip smaller fish apart. I carried two Labeo specimens from north India to my home last week and one had taken out the eye of the other in transit. Both the specimens eventually went to a friend who dropped it in a tank filled with barbs and those poor barbs now look like they belong to an undescribed genus (no caudal fins

They could well be Jools, i always thought they was black sharks, over 15 years ago when i went and i seem to remember them being that sp. Here's a vid of same tank and one of the large Labeos at 1.55

The big African Labeo look just like the SE Asian species but they are different species.
