Does CatCon travel?

Post by bekateen »

Hi All,
Being new to this site, and only recently reentering the aquarium habit, I'm not familiar with the routine or history of CatCon. Does CatCon travel to different towns from year to year? And if so, does anyone know if it will be coming to Central California (San Francisco / Sacramento areas) in the future?
Thanks, Eric

This one will be number six! It is hosted by the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society and has always been in their area. I'm not aware of any changes.

Yes, that would be nice. The challenges for me this year (besides the fact that it is just next weekend) are my work schedule and being a single parent - difficult to leave kids at home, or pay for hauling all of them across country. Hopefully with some planning, the details can be worked out for the next convention. Woo-hoo! I haven't been to a fish sale like this since I was a teenager! (that was back before cell phones, the internet, and cars with an FM radio included as a standard feature).
Cheers, Eric
And if I can get there, of course, then comes the challenge of finding more tanks at home to accommodate any new fish I bring back. Ha Ha Ha... Oh dear me. #-O

Ouch! You all can't hear it, but my kids heard what I posted and they practically vomited with disgust. Apparently, after the age of 50 (and probably more like 15), I'm not allowed to say, "represent." LOL

(it's kinda fun to annoy my kids by acting their age. Ha ha.)

Lol I know the feeling bekateen, really wanted to go myself. Told the hubby and got a resounding NO after he saw my estimated budget and the fact he'd be left alone with 3 kids for a week. 15 yo, 7 yo, and a 5 month old add in the week absence, fish care of 15 tanks (and a threat of you break another filter...) and a budget of $2500 CDN and the No was very firm lol. Love my kids but they are a handful. Agree with Burger, try and get your local club to do a fish show/auction. My local (Aquarium Club of Edmonton) did one and it was a hit, with several wonderful speakers The wonderful and comedic Ian Fuller (corys),Peter DeSouza (killifish),Anton Lamboj (Ananbantoids).

Site suggestion: Sometimes it would be nice to have a "Like" button. :-D :-D :-D. (okay, I'm kidding about the site suggestion... But I like your story)

For reasons I have never understood the U.S. hobby is simply not organized on the west coast like it is on the east coast (and in the mid west). The D.C. area alone has three major aquarium clubs.

When I was a child, I lived in Southern California and belonged to the "Tri-City Aquarium Society" of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. I don't know if it still exists anymore (all Google results for it go back to the 1960's-1970's, which is when I would have been a member; nothing current). Ah, fond memories. (sorry - off topic)

There are actually a number of clubs on the West Coast but they seem to be more on the northern side.

Greater Seattle Aquarium Society
Greater Portland Aquarium Society
Pacific Coast Cichlid Association
And C.O.A.S.T. Which meets in Costa Mesa.

Rumor has it there may be a catfish convention in the Midwest next year.

Milwaukee Aquarium Society is holding a mini convention on November 14-16th and it has a catfish lean to it this year. Although it's more of a general fish convention.

Andy, I hope that pans out. I am ready to stock up on some catfish. I would love to see an annual show move from city to city on the PVAC off years.
