L270 gender identification

Post by aquariumhobbyist »

Is it possible to determine the gender of these two fish being sold under the label "L270"?

Hi,
The bottom one is 100% male.
The top one feels like a male too, as long as your hand is about the same size as mine, although the females can be hard to identify.

Cheers

Thanks! Not my hand, the seller's... seller says it was sold to him as a male and a female but he reckons they are both males. I guess that goes in parallel with your analysis then... Is size the only factor with these fish?

Hi,
Size was really just giving me an indication of maturity, and whether they should be showing any differences.

9 months ago, I thought that my only breeding female had died. But they are breeding again, so obviously there are females still in the breeding group.

Last week I was looking at a group of about 50 of these fish in the 5-7cm size and after a while it became quite obvious which were the different sex's based on body shape, but as adults the females seem to "thin" out a bit when not in condition.

If you look at the last few photos here you can see that the female identification can be a little tricky.

If I look at your photo again then there are some differences:
The bottom fish obviously has quite a good set of odontodes on the leading edge of the pectoral fins.
The bottom fish has a thicker girth to the body in the area from the tail, up to the bottom edge of the dorsal fin.
(A female in "condition" will be thicker in girth near to where the ventral fins join the body)
The bottom fish has a more defined area for the cheek odontodes.
The bottom fish looks to have "rougher" skin.
So there are differences.

If they are not too expensive then it may be worth buying them, especially after looking at the picture of a male and female side by side in the link above.

After all I had difficulity sexing my own adult fish, so if they were sold to your seller as a pair, and he has not spawned them then that may lead them to think that they are two males. You may be able to negotiate the price better since the top fish could be described as a possible female.

Put them in a tank at about 29 - 29.5 C
Feed well.
The male will take up residence in a cave, and the other fish may also use a cave, or just hang out.
Once the male is happy in his cave put in a small powerhead that is blowing water accross the mouth of the cave. Note that the powerhead should be at the same level as the cave.
Change 35-50% of the water twice a week with water that is 8-10 C cooler than the tank water.
Within a month they should be spawning.

Cheers

Geoff
