100 Gallon Tank stocking options

Post by echankarsingh »

So I am getting a 100 gallon tank through an aquarist friend. I know I will have a sand substrate, with sturdy Anubis-like plants, quite a few caves. I want this tank to be a good mixture of colourful, community fish and interesting catfish and loaches for the bottom of the tank. I have a good idea of the community fish I want but have no ideas really on catfish. I know I will have lots of Corydoras...So my community fish list so far is:
1 Rope Fish
2 Dojo Loaches
1 Black GhostKnife fish
1 Steel Blue Killifish
1 Gold Gourami
2 Pearl Gourami(M/F)
2 Angelfish(M/F)
1 Honey Gourami
2 Bolivian Rams
1 Jack Dempsey Cichlid??

I am open to any suggestions for numbers and more types of community style fish for my tank, I would really like to put a few interesting catfish in there. I don't want Pleacos, nothing against them, I just already have one. And I already have Pictus Catfish so I won't be getting more of them.

Black ghost knifefish grow huge & are not community fish at all - neither is a jack dempsey

the honey gourami & rams could even be looked at as food by the ropefish.

There are so many cats you could consider i'd rather you tell us what you fancy & we could advise on availability & husbandry

Yeah I really, really love the way the Ropefish looks but it will just take up so much space for one fish. My partner is absolutely set on a Knifefish, so I will have to get one. I figured it'd be better to have 3 Dojo Loaches, 1 Knifefish. So the Rams are definitely staying, same with the Gourami, will probably be a Blue Dot instead though. I was also thinking of staying away from Cichlids in general other then the Kribensis. I could switch the Jack Dempsey for an Albino Rainbow Shark. I can't put Cories in with a Knifefish can I? I really love my Pictus catfish, I was looking for something similar to the Striped Raphael Catfish, they have them at my LFS but I've heard these guys get massive! We don't have alot of rare catfish out here, fewer here in Edmonton. So just some "common" catfish names that I can look up and call around for would be great!
3 Dojo Loaches
1 Knifefish
1 Albino Rainbow Shark
1 Killifish
2 Bolivian Rams
3 Assorted Gouramis
........i dont know what else...

The BGK can get to 20" long & will eat small fish

Striped raphael get to 8" & also eat small fish

Killifish are a bit of a specialism & ideally should be kept in small species tanks

ps - Pictus really need to be kept in groups of 5+

Hi there, after a ton of research I've decided against the Killifish, they are $30 out here for a single fish anyways(way too expensive) I have a much better stocking list now but still need suggestions for some middle-upper schooling fish to add colour and activity.

1 Black Ghost Knifefish
1 Peacock Eel
1 Opaline/Blue Dot Gourami(docile)
1 Gold Gourami(very docile)
4 Pictus Catfish
3 Bolivian Rams
Angels(how many can I out in? Male/female ratio?)
2 Pearl Gourami (M/F)
Aquadvisor says my tank is 57% stocked at this point so 2 schools of 2"-4" fish should be fine. Suggestions?

We don't have alot of rare catfish out here, fewer here in Edmonton.

What is it you would really like?????

The supply locally to you is really not terrible if you know where to look.
