Post by lfinley58 »

Francis A, Sivakumar R, Mathialagan R. Studies Illustrative Morphological Systematics of Catfish Genus: Mystus (Scopoli, 1777) (Siluriformes:
Bagridae) in Lower Anicut, Tamil Nadu, India. Indian Journal of Science, 2014, 10(23), 14-31.

ABSTRACT
Teleost fishes like ‘catfishes’ is an important part of the ichthyofauna in wetlands and many of them are economically important one. Morphological identification of Bagridae fishes (Genus: Mystus atrifasciatus, M.dibrugarensis, M.albolineatus and M.bleekeri) were studied based on morphometric and meristic analyses. Live fish samples of 200 individuals were collected during June 2010 to May 2011 from commercial landing centre at Lower Anicut. 16 morphometric and 5 meristic characters were analysed with the help of a univariate Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to explore the results. The morphometric and meristic analysis provided a conclusive evidence to separate all the distinct species. Maxillary barbels, types of fin rays, structure of adipose and caudal fin and total vertebrae were the most prominent characters that can be used to differentiate the species. Moreover, the univariate analysis revealed that, the significant differences between means all species.

Hello all.

First I will note that I was going to put Indian in the title in quotes. Sorry that I forgot.

This forum is for Taxonomy and Science and I posted this paper as a bad example of both. The paper is at best bizarre and at its worst...well, Silurus provided a more than adequate term. Thanks HH.

It is strange that something so much of a mess can get journal published and potentially become a reference source for some. So much for editorial overview...or the lack thereof!

While we do like to see the good, it can also be informative to see the bad. Read the paper...have a laugh (or a cry) and move on. Like it or not once something is published the bad is with us and must be acknowledged...and then properly flushed in a forum such as this.
