Two of them were so skinny that they did not make it to the weekend.... The other 8 know by now how to evade the larger auchenipterids and eat like horses, so afaic they're doing fine.
Alas, like many characins not a true shoaler - at least not in these numbers.

Added 9 more Gnathocharax yesterday, which brings the total to 17 specimens. Ordered 10, but one was d.o.a. On the positive side however, these are a bit bigger than the ones from the first batch. Now let's see if this makes them shoal.

I have 10 left. 1 Dissapeared mysteriously and 1 died in a "hospitaltank" due to a heaterfailure. 70 degrees Celsius was too much

There is one that sometimes have weird swellings near the pectoral fin.
The other ones are alive and kicking. Still pretty agressive. A bit gray from a distance but when I sit in front of the tank they are just real nice.

Today I am going to "remove" the Panaque maccus. They cause too much dust.

If you want a slightly bigger lively torpedo thing, check out Hemiodus gracilis (or ternetzi). These put on some fantastic red colours as they grow. Group pic (C) my friend Frode.

you will not be disapointed, they are an amazing and interesting fish, supply them with a cave as that is where the male will take up residence, and fingers crossed you may get a spawn
here is a short video of a young male courting a female and trying to entice her into his cave, it is not the best quality, but you should get the idea

I'll try and sort some out Nate though they are quite secretive and only seen three at any one time do far!

Completely new species for me and they look promising: Semaprochilodus taeniurus

That's a nice looking group of Semaprochilodus you have!

We have three Semaprochilodus of some type - not sure if they're the same species as yours, or even the same species as each other. (The small ones seem to have a different tail pattern from the large one, but I don't know anything about characin taxonomy! If anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it.) We wanted a slightly larger group, but we've had trouble finding healthy ones locally. It's hard to tell from the perspective, but two small ones are ~10cm and the larger one ~25cm.

The strange prochilodus mouth shape is visible in the photo of the larger one by himself. Sorry the photos are so unclear! Some of the angelfish are trying to breed, and the Geophagus adolescents are nearing adulthood and getting territorial, so the atmosphere in the tank is a "little" chaotic right now. The catfish are thankfully keeping out of the way.

Here is one of my favorite medium sized SA Characins. Chilodus punctatus.
Not a perfect photo but it's the only one I have. They are a headstander which I have found to be good at cleaning algae off broad leaved plants. They are peaceful although I have seen them harmlessly scrap with each other which is fun to watch.
An all around interesting species which I think goes under appreciated. I think they would make a nice display with a school of some Hemiodon sp.
