Mega Clown or Mega Crown / Slim chance something else?

Post by JamesFish »

Hi,

I saw this little guy for £27.50 at a fish store and couldn't resist. Only label was a mega clown but a small part of my brain has doubts. I love him to bits already and he's settling into my 2ft which is serving as a q tank for a bit.

Seems very active and not afraid in fact 2 small sinking wafers for catfish and a little blood worm gel by tetra seem to have brought him right out front.

Would anyone be kind enough to confirm ID. Sorry for the pictures I'm not great camera man and its a small fast fish with a 5mp camera.

current tank mates are a male half moon fighter, 2 x chain loaches, female platy, baby platy and some baby ancistrus.

Hi,

Thanks will try and get some better ones when he / she is feeling happier moved towards tank and legged it to the back so not keen on the camera. Don't think will appreciate being hassled for a picture on first day in new tank.

Well tried to get a better pic he / she is not very agreeable to the camera but that's not to unexpected on a closer look believe L015 or L049 still a lovely fish.

Best pic I have attached for the little use it is. Sorry I'm crap at photos. Currently sitting at home in my 18" as wasn't settling well with baby ancistrus. Sharing a home now with 3 cherry shrimp and an odd ball rasbora. Was with some small corys but they have been moved for medication.

He / She has discovered the substrate is light and to dig in it. Now well and truly under the bog wood so any pictures are going to be a long time coming. Bright side is eating the food overnight as nothing else in the tank.

Any suggestions on how to bring out to play? Currently sharing the 18" tank with 2 cherry shrimp.

I am almost certain you have a L340 Megaclown - I have kept these for a number of years.

Think ths little one believe a guy has grown a little and has moved to a new spot where I could get a picture. Here's to these being a better example with luck.

Sadly I lost this little fella due to a fight with a growing Ancistrus. They had shared the 2ft for months and he previously shared the 2ft even in the same cave as an adult without issues.( my adult male is called bam bam and has never shown any real violence except towards females when trapping or defending eggs, he's shared tanks with up to 3 other catfish similar to him and never been any bother) He had others but always chose to go into the ancistrus one and was never kicked out.

I guess this shows the temperament of the fish makes a big difference. As I didn't see him very often he took 2 big bite marks and once separated into an 18" tank for recovery became infected with fungus treated with disease clear but it killed him within 12 hours. The heater is behind the HMF filter so know it was not a burn. Treated at recommended lvls and next morning dead. Yes the fungus cleared but sadly killed the fish. I must have missed the small print for this type of fish or perhaps they are sensitive to meds and salt would have been a safer option. Sad as he had got a rather nice little size and was my aim to get more of and breed as they don't come up often in my area. 2 years and probably 30-40 fish shop visits later and only ever managed to grab 1.
