Hisonotus aky type- new pick ups

A good buddy of mine just went collecting in Uruguay and brought me back a few species. I am a bit of junkie for these little sucker mouths. This species was collected in Gato, Uruguay. I can provide a shot of the collection point as well. They are not as green in appearance as the other aky's I have seen, so not sure if it is the same species or not, but definitely very similar.

Quite similar to the fishes I collected there myuself - and I keep referring to them as Hisonotus.

I got them from the Arroyo Tropo Vieja - that is near Salinas, where Felipe lives, and from the Arroyo Tala in the region Salto, that is in the north of the country.

Visually I can see no differneces between them, but i will, obviously, keep them separated.

The ones from Ay Tropo Vieja were collected some 8 years back

Hisonotus iota

is known from Uruguay but the tail pattern looks wrong. Wrong tail for AKy too - possibly an unidentified species?

We collected these guys from a place called Gajo Tbo' Chico at KM 189 on Ruta 31 (between Salto and Tacuarembo, Uruguay)...a couple of hours down the road from Arroyo Tala, Bas

It was a wonderful collecting spot with rocky bottom, fast flowing water in some areas (with Ancistrus and Heptaterus sp.) and lots of Uruguayan swords and other vegetation where the water got a little deeper and slowed down into the main stream channel.

The Hisonotus were on the plants in places with some but not a lot of current. There were some that looked golder and some that looked greener and they seemed larger than Hisonotus we collected elsewhere. They ate readily when I was quarantining them (algae covered plastic plants and a coconut cave plus flake).

I also brought home some Ancistrus, Australoheros (chanchitos) and Heptapterus cats from here...

The beauty of going on a trip with Felipe (www.aqvaterra.com) is that you can stop anywhere that looks promising - this was a new place for him too - and bring the fish with you!

I was pretty sure they were a new species, but am far from an ichthyologist. Shane Linder took a look at them when I got them from my buddy.

I also got some pretty rad Microglanis (from ansina, rio tacuarenbo) and an eel cat (Heptapterus mustelinus, also from Gajo). I hope to photograph those guys soon as well, they are being a bit more elusive to the camera.
