Please help ID this corydoras!

Post by Orinocensis1 »

Hello everyone, was wondering if someone could help ID this Cory for me. Suppose to be from the rio Tocantins. C062 looks to be close but not exactly it on my opinion. Thanks in advance

That's the same picture used in Discus Origin's recent aquabid auction for C151 - http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/ ... 1393979423 I was thinking they look like C.leucomelas, but that fish is very similar to C151 and I'm no expert. Discus Origins said in his auction that the ID of C151 was "guided by Frank Falcone and Ian Fuller" maybe one of them can step in and help.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi,

it's definitely no C. leucomelas.

I didn't think so, especially coming out of Brazil, that was just my first impression (not a very good one!). :d

Yes these were from mark at DO. He only had 8 and I purchased them all. We are beginning to think it is a new undescribed species. Very beautiful, I'll have to post new pics of them in my tanks soon.

Ah, that explains it! Keep us posted on what you find out. If you need help getting a clear ID let me know and I can post your picture with any collection information you can get on several of the other Corydoras sites/FB pages that I frequent. On a side note I ordered some Corydoras pulcher and some "Corydoras kanei" from a different vendor. They arrived today and I was able to quickly run home at lunch and get them in a tank. The C.pulcher were amazing, as far as the other group I didn't get a great look at them yet, but at first glance they may be similar to what you got from Mark. I'm definitely not 100% on the vendors ID of C.kanei. I'll post an update tonight after I've had a chance to really check them out and hopefully get a few pictures.

Fish were listed as corydoras sp. rio Tocantins short nose.

Here's a pic from a few days ago. Will post better ones soon.

Nice picture! Definitely different than what I have. Got my group from wetspot, but they seem to be giving me contradictory information on where they came from originally. One person there said they came in with the shipment of C.pulcher and C.robustus (Both Rio Purus sp.) and another employee replied to my pleas for collection information with "they came from Peru - that's all we know" - Gotta love getting the run around. I asked if they would please at least give me the exporter's name, but I guess that's too much of a "trade secret" for me to handle. I wish U.S. vendors were a little bit less tight lipped about where they got their fish from - it would make ID's so much easier. I'll try to get some pictures soon, I got some amazing C.pulcher from wetspot and tomorrow I should be getting C.armatus, C.acutus, and C. semiaquilus so my camera will be clicking!

Sorry for the delay I finally got some crummy iphone pictures of the "C.kanei" I got from wetspot. As I am no ID'ing expert if someone wants to step in and tell me what I actually have here that would be great too! I don't think they look quite like the fish you got from Discus Origins

I purchased six of these as well. They didn't look like kanei. Any ideas Ian.

Hey everyone
I did more research and this species looks to be C062. Very little pictures of them online but they look just like mine and collection point is the same. Im guessing they are rare since not much information and no registered keepers of the species on this site.

Hopefully I can successfuly breed these and spread some around one day, they are a awesome species!

I don't think they are C62, the black is confined to the dorsal second and third soft ray. Your fish has the black in mre rays and it extends into the body. I still stick with C151

Ian, thanks for your opinion i really appreciate it!

this is what im looking at:

i know getting collection points on the fish isnt always accurate, heck, its rarely accurate, but the fish i have were suppose to be collected from the rio tocantins and i see that c62 is from there as well. the c151 are supose to be from the tapajos.

another thing is that the c151 on your website is one of the only pictures on the internet and from what i see in that pic, the c151 do not have spotting on its face and my fish have tons of spots on the face, even the wiskers! i notice that c62 also has lots of spots on its face.

here is the pic from planetcatfish of c62 looks very similar to my fish.

and finally, a pic of a c151.. notice these fish do not have spots on head and have a light orange stripe on this head. c62 and my fish have orange tinted gill plate. also head shape looks a bit different to me and spots on my fish look very tiny like c62. also tail on my fish and c62 look to have lots of dark vertical stripes and c151 looks to have none or very lights stripes. just wanted to point out my points on why i think it is a c62 and not a c151. thanks for reading!
