Banjo cats for 20 gallon.

I have a discarded 20 gallon( 24L 12H 12w) in my basement, Once cycled if i were to put sand/rocks/wood in it could I keep a few banjo catfish or would they need a larger system.

In a species tank banjos would be fine in that tank - rocks not really needed, & not much wood. a quality sand substrate with some cover from a few plants should be enough. You could also add dead beech or oak leaves to create a 'forest stream look'

I head that the regalar banjos hide themselves in the sand all the time, and that Big headed or whiptail banjos dont and although harder to find make better subjects for the aquaium. Anyone had info on these types of banjos

whiptail banjos will be 10X more expensive.

My experience with them mostly include almost buying them and going to Raphs instead. However, my LFS guru, Chris, manages a bunch of tanks for clients, and recommends a larger tank for them to be comfortable, especially in large groups. A 40 should be fine. If you feel like escaping the snow any time soon, I have an empty 45 gallon tank with stand that you're welcome to come grab. ;)

How much would you be willing to charge? I live in st paul mn. if you'd like I'll PM you my adress. But to be truthful i'm not esspically thinking i will be able to get another tank. Due to space and other factors. If I were to set it up on an unheated porch room is fine but heat is an issue - rarely gets over 50 degrees in winter. could I get away with it if I ump up the heater in winter?

Whiptail banjos need quite a big tank a they commonly get to 10" & on occasion can get very active (atmospheric pressure changes).

Banjos are natural burrowers so it's only to be expected when keeping these

Hi there,

I have a pair of whiptail banjo's. Amazing fish.
Whilst they do sometimes burrow in the sand, they also just sit on top of the sand in the shadey side of a rock or piece of bogwood.

If they are buried, the slightest bit of food always has them quickly scooting around and hoovering up
