Synodontis polli

Hi, I have a spawn from a wild pair of Synodontis polli. The pair is 3 years old and must have spawned when they were kept with my Tropheus because after cleaning the tank, I have discovered 2 fry. I have since set them up in a spawning tank and they finally spawned for me.

I was wondering what the going price is on 1/2" fry here in the USA and if there is any interest in these cool cats?

I don't recall ever seeing F1 polli fry for sale. I would imagine they would be in the 10-15$ apiece range at 1/2 inch. I would be interested in buying some eventually. I'm in the process of moving house right now so have put a hold on any fish purchases.

I have never seen or heard of any f1 polli either. I was so excited with this spawn and I was hoping that there would be more interest in them. I'll have some around whenever you're ready to buy some. Thanks for your reply.

Hi,
I would be interested in some also. I have one S polli but would like a few more but I'm guessing it might be better to wait until warmer weather unless you know how to pack and ship fish. I wish you lived closer, it would make a great road trip (not from Boston Ma. however)

I've seen them advertised for sale for time to time (in the UK) but I don't know if those offered for sale had an firm ID or not. There has been a lot of clarification of this group of fishes over the years / same timeframe.

I do know the has been bred. Your fish look like from the pics, but it's hard to be as sure as possible just from those pics. Have you got "in tank" pics of the adults we can have a good look at?

These do look like polli - not the 'white polli' as Jools suggests above

The 'white/zambian polli' have been bred prolifically in the uk by someone up northeast whose name escapes me.

There is a video on youtube of true polli spawning cuckoo style but occurrances are very rare as far as i'm aware.

Did I? My intention was to say that 'white polli' had been bred/documented and that those details on S. polli are sketchy.

Reading it back, my post is confusing & needs some better punctuation.

The fish is polli as jools suggests, not white/Zambian Polli as jools also indicated.

These are not the white polli. Its hard for me to get a picture of the adult pair in the tank because they are very shy. Here is a link to a video of a spawn and the adult pair in their tank but the video isn't that great.

I'll try to get some better pictures or a better video. I'll look into shipping after the holidays. Too easy to loose a package.

They are very cute. The tank looks empty until I feed them. Then all of a sudden, they start venturing out.

How did you go about breeding these? Was it the lucipinnis cave & bowl of marbles? Or did they cuckoo spawn? They look nice & healthy, thanks for sharing.

I have read a couple articles on the internet where the authors say that polli are cuckoo spawners. These are not cuckoo spawners at all. Mine spawned in a cave that was in a tank with my Tropheus. They do unfortunately eat their eggs.

Thank you Jools, I'll try and get them into an empty tank and maybe get a video. They are so shy that they hide the minute I get close.

All I can say is that mine spawn over a bed of marbles inside a cave. Here is a better video of the pair with a few fry in their tank.

That's great as it demonstrates polli are adaptable to spawn in different ways.

Multis (grandiops?) have been known to scatter in the absence of mouth brooding cichlids, again demonstrating adaptability

That may be Richard but I've kept this pair in with spawning Tropheus and they showed no signs of even wanting to spawn. They began spawning once I gave them their own tank. You can even see the female nice and plump in the above video.
