hey everyone! Damian here. i acquired this fish as a gift a few years ago and i have been trying to get a mate for it. i am not sure of the sex. i have other bushy nose plecos that have a lot of bristles at this age for males but i have females that have none so is this a male just becoming manly enough or is this a female? thanks

that could actually be a female, but we'll have to wait and see. give a few months to a year and see if more bristles grow and if it slims out. females tend to stay fat and wide males slim out a lot. also males will start to grow bristles on the upper surface of the face/forehead too.

If you have had the fish several years, and the tentacles have not developed beyond what the photos show, then I would say it is almost certain you have a female.
Finding a mate may be difficult. There are numerous blackwater Ancistrus species with coloration very similar to your fish.

this is not a common bristlenose, that's all i can say haha. does help much i know...

thank you guys for the prompt replies. i have had it for several years and that is the most bristles i have seen so i will stick with calling it a female
now...how about we find her a male!

yea if its several years, i agree it should be a female. looks like a female to me

I know you got your question answered, but I thought that I could add that I have two adult females and they look almost exactly like this.
