Hypoptopoma juveniles

Hi everbody,

Today I moved my aquarium from my old house to my new house. During the time I was emptying my tank, I found little fry in my 1.60m tank. Because I found two fry during the time I was emptying the tank, I decide to leave a small amount of water in the tank so that maybe there would be more fry. During to time I was filling the tank in my new house I found another four fry. So I moved the 6 fry in my small breeder tank so that they could grow up. My guess is that it could be Hypoptopoma fry, because I don't keep other small Loricariidae in that tank. Only Awaous flavus, Sturisoma's, Pterophyllum, Copella and Poecilia wingei.

Looks to me like Hypop fry. What sp. do you have?

I'm not sure what kind of Hypoptopoma I have. It could be sp. 2 and thoracatum, but I'm not sure.

Today I cautht one of the Hypoptopoma on a Echinodorus bleheri leave, just on top of a bunch of eggs. Here's a pictures made by my phone.

Today I discovered that it isn't eggs what I saw, but Hypoptopoma larvae.
I decided to put the leave with the larvae in a breeders net in the tank.

I don't think I've ever seen fry of Hypoptopoma before - they're excellently patterned.

The other pictures are currently not functioning, because I of a limit of sharing pictures monthly. In July should all the pictures word again.

I have wondered whether Hypoptopoma provided broodcare or whether they were adhesive egg scatterers as the Otocinclus.
Thanks to your evidence, now we know.
Despite having greatly cut back on breeding fishes, I would consider trying to keep a group of them and hope for the best.

Parotocinclus cf_eppleyi

are also a relative that is on my fish breeding "bucket list".

Sadly I lost all of the Hypoptopoma fry. It's difficult to get them to eat.
But I get a second change now, just watched the Hypoptopoma sp. couple laying eggs.
It's the same way as Sturisoma are laying their eggs.

The first attempt was in a breeders net, but the secon attempt will ve with a guppy breeder that is going to be modified. But still trying to find out what I have to give them as food. I could try cucumber. But maybe I want to try something what people do with Loricariidae that aren't easy to feed. That is use eggs whites on a flat stone and place some spirulina algea and some other crush tablets on it. Then wait for 24 hours and then its ready to use.
Any tips on feeding fry would be apreciated.

I would use Spirulina and earthworm sticks.

Today the Hypoptopoma inexspectatum spawned again.

Today 7 October, I replaced the eggs and larvae into a small plastic tank. It stands on my TL Luminaire of the 80cm tank. So it should be warm enough for the larvae and the eggs. Now I have to find a way of feeding them the right food. It's difficult to get them eating.

Unfortunately this attempt is also ended in nothing. After I placed them in a Aqua Cube, they slowly started to disappear.

But luckily shortley after that, the couple Hypoptopoma, laid eggs again.
So now I keep them in a breeders box inside the 2m tank. In this small box a placed some small pieces of wood and some leaves. They seem to appreciate the pieces of wood, because almost every juvenile is sitting on it.

Replaced the juveniles because my Pterophyllum leopoldi has sucked some of the juveniles through the small slots of the breeders tank.

Yesterday I spotted another leave full of Hypoptopoma eggs. This time I placed the floating tank in the 80cm tank, were I also keep 70 Juvenile Corydoras paleatus.

Update about the Hypoptopoma juveniles.
Managed to raise 2 juveniles from the nest. Still not easy to find the right food source for the juveniles.
But I already have separated another bunch of larvae.

Hi,

have you tried artemia nauplii ?
I have raised lots of Parotocinclus (haroldoi and cf. spilosoma) and Otothyropsis piribebuy with artemia nauplii.
They grow like hell with this food and I didn't have much losses.

Quite often you can read that this food is not recommended as it is too nutritious for these herbivores or that the fry has problems when some artemia eggs which did not hatch are swallowed.
I assume that the content of their yolk sack is not too different from the one of artemia and at least for the first days and weeks this is an excellent food. In my artemia incubator (not aerated) I get 100% nauplii without eggs. However, I had excellent results with it and I think it is at least worth a try.

I have also tried with the mentionned species to feed microworms but the result was disastrous. They were eagerly eating the worm but starved nevertheless.

I have not yet tried but would nevertheless recommend to put leaves of walnut tree. I use it for raising whiptails (additionally to artemia nauplii) and they always suck on them and like this they always have something (less nutritious) in between.

Update about breeding Hypoptopoma's.

After putting 30+ larvae of the Hypoptopoma into a floating tank, I managed to raise at least 16 juveniles that have grown a lot.

I mainly fed them with Artemia and they seen to prefer oak and beech leaves a lot.
So this could be the trick to raise more juveniles the next time.
I also want to try some other leaves.
