Hypostomus species or Hybrid?

Post by OxleyFishFarm »

Also have the common type of Hypostomus plecostomus, but this is different yet still a Hypostomus sp. of some sort?

Also have Glyptoperichthys, L001, L196 and this is more to the Hypostomus shape etc yet the lines confuse?

Any advise much appreciated.

Thanks

Pictures aren't clear enough, but the body shape is certainly resembling , and I'm pretty sure that's what it is. You will find that we follow Armbruster's naming, so what you call Glyptoperichthys is called Pterygoplcichthys on this site.

A hypostomus plecostomus bred with a Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus producing these.

Whilst there are plenty of Hypostominae hybrids, I find that unlikely - are you sure the "Hypostomus plecostomus" isn't of the - which is very often sold in shops as H. plecostomus, where the "real" is quite rarely found in shops these days (it used to be common some 25+ years ago).

Hi,

the shown fish is clearly a Pterygoplichthys, and no hybrid, possibly P. joselimaianus.
So far it has never been recorded that Hypostomus and Pterygoplichthys can produce hybrids.

The real H. plecostomus is never sold in shops, mostly the name is used for P. pardalis, P. gibbiceps and all other brown plecos.
