Hi . I'm abit concerned about my L177. It has changed colour, from yellow on black to yellow on pale brown. He seems to be behaving normaly (eating swimming etc.) but I'm worried all the same, especially with the reputation of gold nuggets sudden deaths.
Please tell me that he is OK ( he is my family's favourite!!)

Hi plesner. The colour change happened over 2/3 days and I've not made any changes to the tank/water for nearly three weeks, but a water change is due as my nitrates are getting close to 20ppm(I use nitrates as a guide).
Thanks

I may be a little too careful, but I try to keep my nitrate levels way below 20 ppm. I dunno if a water change will solve your problem (hopefully it will), but I would change some water if I was you.
My L-177 turned that color when I moved the tank to my new house, but he was back to his normal color within 2 hours or so after going back in the tank.
Plecos are the true centerpieces of any aquarium. Everything else just swims around them!!
I'm under the impression that it's perfectly normal for L177 to change colour. My two are yellow on black most of the time, but they do get quite pale from time to time.
There's a couple of photos showing this in the Catfish of the Month article on gold nuggets.
Thanks for the reasurances . I am going to do a water 30% change today and another midway through the week just to be on the safe side though. Then I think I'll go back to a weekly schedule.
