Pseudacanthicus triple play

Post by PseudaSmart »

It has been a busy time in the Fish Room since the national convention in October. On the drive back we stopped at the airport and picked up my box with 2 pairs of L97s from Brazil. For the next several weeks my wife and I were busy with requests for L600 and L160 fry from all of the great people we met at the convention. At the same time I started to condition the L97s. Then things really started to get busy.
November 26th the L160s spawned again.
December 1st the L600s were moved into a spawning tank.
December 29th the L97s were moved into a spawning tank.
December 31st the L600s spawned again.
January 8th the L97s spawned for the first time!
All of this action in less than three months!
Here are photos from today.

My goal is to keep these species available in the hobby. I am looking for my next pseuda project and would appreciate a PM if anyone has any leads on adult Pseudacanthicus.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim!
Its like you have Ancistrus! =)) You make it look so easy. But these are all quite difficult fish to breed! Amazing effort!

Very nice congratulations.

What do you feed them and on what temperature do you keep them?

Maybe you should try L25 or L273.

Thank you for the kind words. It has taken over 4 years to understand them. They are rather quiet and do not like to give up their secrets.

With regards to wate temperature they like the low 80s. I raise or lower the temperature for several months at a time to simulate the seasons. For food I use Thera A and carnivore pellets with natural frozen foods from time to time.

I do not have any immediate breeding prospects for another Pseudacanthicus species. I have juvenile L24s and L25s but it will be at almost 2 years before they are large enough to spawn. The large (over 10") L24s and L25s that are available are almost exclusively male. I do not have the resources to buy sight unseen.

With luck someone reading this post will be willing to sell me at least a female and I can find a matching male. I am committed to keeping the price of the fry reasonable so many can enjoy them. The response to my L600 fry was very positive and they sold rather quickly. It was a good price point. Any species I breed in the future will be in the same range. (Even 24s,25s, and 273s)

In the past three years I have been to Brazil 7 times (Sao Paulo and further south). Even in this short span of time the changes to the areas I visit have been dramatic. Brazil is becomming a presence in the world. It is important to preserve as much as possible before it is gone.
Thanks for the interest.
Jim

Thanks for the kind words. I must confess that it has not been all fun this time. L600 fry are delicate and the survival rate this time has been very low. The 97s and the 160s are much hardier. The magic of beginners luck is over. I will keep moving forward and figure them out.
I will post updated photos in a few days.

Jim!

Even if youre half the way when you got them to breed, its still very amazing to have been able to bred 3 different Pseudas species.
I think the raise up part is a question of clean water, space, temperature and a proper feeding.

I have found L200, L240, L241, L114 and L91 very sensetive to bacterias juring the raising par as for example L397 i have almost never any losses. So way are some species

Its good that we are som people that are willing to contribute to this and solve some important questions.

And again.... an amazing effort!

great job (well from your Pseuda, at least :d )

I'd love to have such informations to publish on PC... but I don't have any more Pseuda...

and I wouldn't have any tank for them these days...

but still, your experience and projects are just great ! Go On !
the Potamotrygon adventure has begun...
