Ancistrus from Rio Guaybo Uraguay

Post by msheresy »

We have auctions at the end of every fish club meeting and fortunately we have a member that collects multiple times a year. He brought in some plecos that he collected in Uraguay last month while there for 3 weeks. It's apparently 1 male and 3 females and he labeled the bag as "Ancistrus Rio Guaybo". He keeps mainly cichlids so he brought back the cats for other members to introduce into the hobby. There were two bags of 1 pleco he brought back but only 1 bag of these so I'm apparently the only one that has these. When things are brought back its always stressed to BREED them for sale within the club and just said that they would needed a stronger flow than reg captive ancistrus

The pictures are crappy iPhone pictures because my DSLR batt is dead and is on charge. Will add better pics when charged. Any thoughts?

Looks like Ancistrus cf. Cirrhosus to me. Not impossible to be caught in Uruguay rivers, considering the country is located south of Brazil were most rivers are interconnected.

They look like Ancistrus I brought home from Uruguay. On the pics they might look like A cf cirhosus, in reality mine look quite different. I futher did not (yet) manage to breed them, whil A cf cirhosus is quite easy to breed

What species? I could not say. As the cat e loge does not haved many fishes from Uruguay (I did not find any, but I might have missed one or two) these fishes are new to this forum

And it might be an undescribed species

I know you asked me about pics of mine a while ago. I am not the best photographer and they like to hide. I don't think they look that different than yours.

Immediately following release from quarantine. Not as happy as I would have expected.

I will try to get some better shots if they ever decide to come out of hiding. I have not been successful breeding them. I believe mine are young. They have developed more identifying markers since I got them at the auction. Although I have had great success with the Cory's and have more than 2 dozen F1 fry about 3 weeks old.

If that is true (I have not checked) is just another mistake among many in fishbase, use fishbase as a guideline but not as a truth.
