Peckoltia sp. L076 spawning w/pics

Post by Lars Jamne »

Our wild-caught group of six fully adult L076 decided to spawn during December as they probably overheard us saying they where to be sold next year since they didn't produce anything. Last week I discovered that the backwall of their tank and driftwood was covered in young ones, 12-13 mm in size I guess. And one week after these fry occurred they tried again, but the eggs kept being kicked out of the cave.

Will be interesting to see if they keep it up with several more spawnings in the weeks and months to come.

Water parameters in the breeding tank
Group: Six adult
Tanksize: 115l, sand, lots of driftwood, slate cave and ceramic cave (hole on top)
pH: 6.8
Temp: 28-29C
Conductivity: 140 µS/cm (is this the correct name for this?)
Circulation: 1200 l/h
Filtration: Sponge filter on the entire short-side of the tank
Water change: Adds 2 litres per hour, for 12 hours daily (added water is ph 7.5)

Great news. I love this Peckoltia. Any chance of bringing some fry across to the UK? :d

I wouldn't say it would be impossible, but it might be a bit expensive to ship 'em from Norway to the UK...

Unless we just ship 'em as regular Airmail and see if that works out, been shipping L107, Aspidoras and Hoplosternums locally here in Norway and one shipment took four days as the buyer "forgot" to pick them up at the post office and no fatalities.

Are you coming over to the UK or someone you know is for the UKs Catfish Study Group Convention in March?

Yeah, the fry is really colorful althoug they are still pretty young. Two days ago I found the biggest male in the cave with a big round female and when I checked up on them today the male was watching over a big clutch of eggs. So I removed him in the cave w/eggs from main tank to a 85l tank filled with only driftwood and the same water parameters. Hopefully he'll take good care of the eggs this time, because the 2nd time they spawned the eggs where kicked out of the cave.

The Peckoltia sp. L076 fry from the 2nd spawning is growing good, although I haven't started feeding them much yet. It's a month since they hatched and they already show good coloring and a pretty nice size. Facebook gallery: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... ea02d3d6fa
