is the only native European catfish I believe. You can also find introduced (from North America) in several countries, especially France.

There are two AFAIK, the other being Silurus aristotelis.

One of those minor pieces of trivia I cling to! :-) It's such an obscure species we don't even have (and I've never seen) a picture of it.

I think it looks pretty much exactly like the wels. But then again, I have been wrong before.

They think they got a pic of a S. aristotelis - this is a rather reputable site closely related/collaborating with FishBase http://www.fishing-worldrecords.com/sci ... telis/show

Very interesting fish but, like you say, a cod-like fish (Gadiformes) not a catfish (Siluriformes).

Yes indeed, burbot are NOT catfish. They were thought to be extinct here in the uk but a couple have been caught in recent years by anglers
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

The beauty is in the eye of a beholder. I love the way they look too but google "the ugliest fish in the world festival in Minnesota" and you will see. E.g., http://screen.yahoo.com/festival-celebr ... 07913.html

Eelpout = burbot.
